Difficult Designer / Brand Pronunciation

I know this name has come up before, but I still don't know how to pronounce Junya Watanabe. (The last name anyway) It's not so much the sounds, but the actual rhythm of how to say "watanabe"..... did my question make any sense??

I felt like the biggest lame recently when learning that Margiela was pronounced Marsjhella (can't really describe it..) and not Marg-ee-ella . . .
and that Emilio Pucci was pronounced Em-ee-lee-oh and not Em-ill-ee-oh

^^i don't think that Marg-ee-ella is too bad as a pronunciation. i guess it's just that the "i" is not as long as an "ee".
if you do that, it ends up sounding much like the "marsjhella" you wrote... the "rsj" is pretty much how you'd do the french R + G + almost-unpronounced-"i"

I think its an equal rhythm for watanabe. Does that make sense? I could be wrong though, since my japanese isn't very strong at all.

I've got a question though. For Rei Kawabuko, isn't the R pronounced like L? I remember my japanese teacher telling us that in Japan no one pronounces the R as R. So rice is pronounced like lice.

For Watanabe: it's all the same rhythm, but there's a slight tone difference between the first syllable "wa" and the other three.

And Japanese Rs aren't necessarily pronounced like Ls, but they are pronounced the same as Japanese Ls. And the end up sounding kind of like Ds. But unless you're speaking Japanese it's perfectly acceptable to pronounce Japanese Rs like English Rs. (Ex. Karaoke, Karate)

Hussein Chalayan: Hoo-sayn Cha-layan
Giambattista Valli: Gee-ahm-battista Valley
Marchesa: Mar-kay-sah
Rodarte: Ro-dar-tay
Gianfranco Ferre: Zhan-franck-o Feh-REH
Monique Lhuillier: Moe-neek Lu-lee-ay
Vionnet: Vee-oh-nay

This is quite late, but it's something I hear people do all the time with Italian names and it kills me a bit. The "i" in Italian is a weak vowel, and when it comes between "g" or "c" and "a," "o," or "u," is not pronounced. So
Giorgio Armani is not Jor-gee-oh Armani, but Jor-jo Armani (English pronunciation of "j") and
Giambattista Valli is more like Jam-ba-ttis-ta Vall-ey (extended pronunciation of the "ll" and accent on the a.)

uhh to clear things up (mainly on Lacroix's posts)..

Louboutin - loo-boo-tin ('tin' with a French pronunciation.. pretty hard to explain online)
Hervé Léger - Air-vay Lay-jay ('leh' as in the word 'lait' or 'les' in French and 'jay' as in the word 'je' in French. not the same J pronunciation as 'juice' or 'jello')
Hermès - Air-mez
Chloé - Klo-ay
Giles Deacon - Jiles (like aisles), not Gilles/Jilles ('jeeles'). i didn't know that though, but it makes sense seeing as how it's not a French name with the double Ls

and from the video of Carine Roitfeld: she pronounces it Ski-a-pa-relli and Nicolas Ghesquière as Jes-kee-air. that one was a hard one.

... so it's a little harder to write out pronunciations without having something to compare it to since most of the hard ones are in French.

Francesco Scognamiglio I find hard to pronounce.
It's like Fran-chesk-oh Scog-nam-lio or something - I know there's a part you miss out.. hmm.

Gareth Pugh...

Because I (think) saw a House of Holland t-shirt that said, "U-HUH Gareth Pugh", I gathered it was correctly pronounces as "Pah" as in Papa.

But everyone around me keeps on pronouncing the name as "Pee-u" as in Puny.

Which one is it?

Thanks in advance. :flower:

Well House of Holland forces its rhymes as in "Give Me Pain Hedi Slimane" which really only works on paper. I am not sure how to say Gareth Pugh I usually say puh like pun I could be wrong.

I've always heard Drees in England and France. Perhaps a Flemish speaker could confirm.

Dries van Noten

Et voilà! :D
