Dolce & Gabbana angry at advertising campaign controversy in Spain

that's a HOT AD!!! nothing wrong with it/ Spain really needs to catch up with times. if they want to ban this ad, they should ban rap song for glamorising guns.

yeah, and why would dolce&gabban uses such ideas to sell their clothing in the first place
okay defnintley sex sells, can't deny that and of course being controversial gets u more attention..
but come on, does d&g really needs more attention?!
then again, what does a silly little unfashionable(and maybe narrow minded) girl like me knows!

One thing the Spanish goverment achieved is that now a lot more people have seen this ad. In my opinion the ban is justified, but it rather has the opposite effect of what was intended.

Great posts xmodel citizen, I agree with everything you've said, although I can see where the "opposing arguments" are coming from.
I find Dolce's ads in general to be pretty tacky and at times offensive, but I don't think they should be banned as well.

But that's just because I'm an ardent First Amendment supporter and the fact that these tactics are nothing new in fashion.. but yeah, not that the amendment applies to Spain, which is by no means 'backward thinking' country for doing this. Actually kudos to the Spanish gov't for fighting back, although I don't know if outright banning the ads is the best way to go, since as many mentioned, for fairness, banning this ad means countless other media should be banned too. Then again, doing one thing is better than nothing.

^Great point Kajsa, no matter what anyone's intentions are, Dolce & Gabbana end up profiting from all this controversy. Their continuous shock factor tactic is predictable and boring, but it stirred up quite a conversation here, no? They say there's no such thing as bad press (although I disagree), and it worked in my case for I've never seen this ad till now, yet now I'm curious to see the rest of the campaign. Anyway, interesting discussion! :flower:

I don't think a government should have the right to ban somthing simply because they find it offensive, tacky, or disgusting. There are many great artworks, books, paintings, ect that are disgustiong or offensive to some people, but I do not feel that the government has the right to interefere with or ban those things.

Obviously, I don't think this advertisement is great art, but I think the same principles should apply across the board. Since when is it the government's job to control the quality and content of Advertising? The government should maintain law and order, and that's about it. I don't think it should be up to them to decide what advertisements are shown in magazines, or to decide waht is or isn't "allowed" in their media.

To me that's too much governmental control, and it's a bit creepy.

stilleto, I completly agree with you about everything you've said. Although I can see why it would be found offensive, just about everything can be found offensive in some way to some group of people. You cant ban everything that someone complains about. Like someone else said before, if you dont like it, dont look at it.

I also wanted to add, I agree with you 100% Guessgirl96.

Different people have different takes on things. That's no reason to keep the people who may enjoy the ad from seeing it. Look away if you don't like it! It's not like you have no option.

I agree with xmodelcitizen. i don't think the ad's about r*pe. It's tapping into sexual fantasies people have and don't want to admit they have.

i agree. but the question is--ias ythat appropriate to dcommunicate a mass media vehicle? this in not within a closed, adult art forum. it is available to everyone.

the placement of the other men is what makes this ad offensive... agree with the spaniards as well

my thoughts exactly.

I hate these ads with implied r*pe x. It's really sad world we live in when people have to use something like that as "sexy".

If D&G actually cared about the consumer base in spain...I think they would've fought to keep it running. They wouldn't want to look defeated if it were that significant.

IMO just a way of them showing how irrelevant the spanish market is to them.

agree with you 100% eternitygoddess, ppl dont admit those fantasies....

While Docle & Gabanna can be at times vulgar and tacky; and the ad was slifhtly suggestive (It looked like a gang bang scene). But banning it is unnaceptable you can't ban something because its offensive and objective even if it is to majority of people. It could be considered artistic expression and banning it would warrent the ban of anything someone deems offensive;

Dolce&Gabbana are as tacky and trashy in their ads as their clothing, but their core customer is pretty much in the same mindframe so that an obvious gang bang scene would resonate well enough. Fair enough, it sells. Calvin Kein should know and was infinitely better at it.
Spain however is going the way of fashion fascism with this new stance. What next?

I don’t find this as offensive as I find it ridiculous. :woot: “Wow, gang-bang! Let me go out and buy a dress for the occasion!” I mean come on, how unintelligent can it get? It’s such a gimmick. If the Spanish want to ban it be my guest, the style of photography is certainly not very aesthetically pleasing either, not to mention it's not all that risqué. Do you remember the ad where a couple of guys spit water on a woman’s exposed breasts? That was far worse.

i'm ashamed to be part of spain when this sort of stuff comes out!!!

ok... i understand this may be a little controversial but hey!! it's just an advertisment!! ads are supposed to be controversial and make people think and remember what they see...
maybe a young 27 yearsold ladie will look at it and say "how horrible!! she is forcing himself on her!!!" but then a couple of hours later she'll realize she wants a pair of shoes she has seen somewhere she cant quite remember... hmmm...
and that's when she goes to Dolce&Gabbana, forgets about the pic and buys a pair of shoes!

jsut a tiny thought... D&G has some ads banned in both Spain and UK, and they dont allow critics from style.com (maybe other publications either)... i assume they dont make much money in these two countries so they dont really bother but what about style.com?? it's a great free advertisment device!!

im not siding with spain, but id hardly call that country "behind the times" when it comes to morality
Yeah, I agree. Um, they legalized gay marriages. Now, how about Italy.
I don't understand why to ban that ad, it's not offensive, really.
