Du Juan

...this is getting very Asian (the worst aspect). Du ji bie ren. It happens pretty often.

And that Han comment was almost inappropriate. In a more cosmopolitan world, I would hope that we've learned to embrace humanity's diversity, and not go so far as to denounce the "look" of an entire ethnic group, lol.

Someone said there can't be a cool girl because they don't want it, but it's more likely that they wouldnt be successful internationally.

....."Safe" beauty isnt considered beautiful in the fashion world, something more is expected.

yeah i'm with you on this. by my standards Du Juan is a 'safe beauty'. I'd love one day to see an unusual Asian female model appealable to both Asians & Westerners who isn't conventionally beautiful by mainstream standards (like the equivalent of a Sasha P or Irina L). i think as we become more global this reflects in our perception of beauty as well, that we can be on the same playing field when it comes to taste.

There are actual surveys conducted & everything...that Chinese girls today overwhelmingly prefer androgynous females as role models over prissy, princess types! (some of you know what i'm talking about :D) ....I thought that's a really interesting phenomenon cuz it's usually a sign of progress when a society allows & tolerates any subcultures that emerge which deviate from the status quo. Such as aesthetic values.

So i'd love to see an androgynous or non-traditional Asian beauty being represented on a global scale as it well reflects the tastes of young people everywhere not just the west :D

nowhere did i say Han's look represented the look of an entire ethnic group, oh god that would be offensive  :ninja: ..it was a reaction to how her look doesnt reflect the aesthetic taste of modern Asian people, but instead reflects the caricaturization of Orientals by Westerners as this 'exotic species'.

what i'm campaigning for is a more realistic representation of Asian beauty that doenst pander to regional stereotypes.

This is getting a bit like what happened in Ziyi Zhang's thread on tFS if you know what i'm talking about, but a lot more friendly.
i hope that we don't get too far.

I fail to see how I could have misunderstood the Han comment.

But you do bring up a point that I doubt most of us can ignore. Is Du Juan sought after b/c she conforms nicely into what the Western mindset expects from an East Asian? Perhaps... Yet, others on board have noted how the vogue in fashion is set on what is different. Many of the premeire models today do not fit the classical mold of beauty, as defined by "western conventions". And as it stands, the industry outside of China is still largely set around these conventions.

Du may not have an uber high nose, giant eyes, but the lack of said-qualifications make her no less beautiful. Western editorials are made for westerners, and I'd imagine that her "look" is precisely what tantalizes the industry.

Of course, it is for those same reasons that her appeal in Asia was far from quick in coming. Subsequent developments would naturally be a spill-over effect, but I do not believe that's a necessarily bad thing. If anything, it's healthy (except for plastic surgeons).

I think Du Juan's deameanor is amazingly graceful.
And I don't think it's because I'm a fellow asian.

Seems like every thread for an Asian ends up like that. :innocent: Take a break people! Beauty is simple! It's just a yes or no, like it or not doesn't matter. Beauty is beauty whether your black, white, yellow, green, blue whatever colour you are!

how Han ended up in the Anna Molinari campaign baffles most Asians cuz by public opinion over there she's considered unattractive. a lot of them are even offended that such an 'ugly' model is used. But since A.Molinari's core customer base is in Europe i can see how her look carries an "edge" there, but it's an edge that is incongruous to the consensus of Asian youths.
For someone who loves unusual/eccentric looking people - what i like to see is the onset of "edgy" Asian models in the fashion world, who also aren't "ugly" by Asian standards, because ugly does not = edgy. :D

BTW everyone... it's ok dudes we're just having a discussion, yeah it's a headache to have to tread through all this -____-lll but what else is there to do while Du takes a week off. heheh

lol. I might've been totally off this whole time, but were you referencing Han as an individual model or Han Chinese?

she was referring to the Asian model "Han" who was in the Anna Molinari campaign. This girl "Han" has a round face, very small eyes, and a receeded chin.
