Editors Threaten to Skip Milan Shows Next September

Good for NYC! I think this is a savvy move: (a) they are willing to compromise the dates in this odd case, and (b) they are not dropping their drawers entirely as they are suggesting there be a binding agreement going forward. It seems a fair enough stance for NYC to take.

Let's see how Milan responds to it. Something tells me they won't budge! If NYC can move their dates, why can't Milan move theirs in kind, so they don't utterly overlap London??

the only compromise for London now is that they either kick off fashion week prior to NY, or close fashoin week after Paris. And honestly, who would want to follow Paris? big shoes to fill. cause at this point it's non-existent between the other cities based on the scheduling.

^Or between Milan and Paris because there's currently a gap there, right?

^ I've read somewhere that Paris has been moved up to start when Milan finishes. I think it might be a few pages back.

^ indeed, there doesn't appear to be any gaps. In fact, it seems that Paris actually nips into Milan on their last day! Paris begins sept 25 2012, Milan is from 19-25

I find all of this to be stupid and childish. I think is screwed up how New York thinks they're so amazing. New York is all about old trends, and Europe is about new. I find New York to be the worst of fashion weeks. And DVF is a total narcissist. Shes willing to jeopardize other companies' shows because she wants the dates changed. The CFDA cannot regulate showtimes in other places. It's bad enough London is treated like the ugly runt of the major fashion weeks, getting barely a week, now they want to make milan shorter. and then they're going to go after paris. I think it's stupid, really. Europe is the best at everything they do. Accessories, clothes, and fashion shows.

Have you read anything in this thread? The Italian council wanted to change the dates-- not the CFDA. The Italian council scheduled its fashion week to run during London Fashion week and thus jeopardized London. The CFDA has not made any move to shorten Milan's fashion week. The "narcissist" DVF is the one who has spoken on behalf of London fashion week and made the compromise change of dates to prevent it from being overshadowed.

She doesn't want the dates changed; that's the point.

So Milan and Paris share a day again? How does that work? Isn't that complicated for the editors too? I guess the most important designers show on the first days but I know Marc Jacobs (random example) shows very late on NY's schedule?

Marc Jacobs doesn't normally show late, it was only this season as his show was pushed back due to the Irene storm. And the first day of Paris is (correct me if I'm wrong) young designers, so in that respect it should be fine.

To recap: Milan consciously set their September 2012 fashion week schedule to overlap with New York and London because Labor Day forced New York to push the fashion weeks back a bit and Milan wasn’t down with that. Despite Vogue editors threatening to skip Milan and the CFDA’s attempts to reason with them, Milan stood their ground. A couple of weeks ago, the CFDA, with whom London has been in cahoots from the beginning, issued a proposal agreeing to move their dates back a week on the condition that Milan and Paris agree to the second-Thursday rule for the long term. From WWD:
Should Milan accept the plan, the September 2012 shows in New York would run from Sept. 6 to 13, and London from Sept. 14 to 18. From 2013 onwards, the show seasons would always kick off on the second Thursday of February and September.
Today, Milan responded with their own proposal, which basically conforms to the aforementioned proposal by the CFDA, with a couple of conditions to show that they aren’t just rolling over. Here is their statement via WSJ:
The Board of Directors of Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana met today and, with regard to the issue concerning the future dates of our fashion weeks’ schedules, it unanimously deliberated to:

Confirm the previous schedule for September 2012 with New York fashion week starting on Thursday 6 of September, followed by London, Milan and Paris Agree for the next two years ( September 2013 and September 2014) with the proposal of Diane Von Furstenberg, President of Council of Fashion Designers of America, to start New York Fashion Week on the second Thursday of September, that is to say on September 12th in 2013 and on September 11th in 2014.

This, at the following conditions:

2.a New York’s last day should be on September 18th in 2013 and on September 17th in 2014 in order to allow London an additional day for the presentation of the menswear collections.

2.b. Paris will accept this structure and follow Milan as always, starting on Wednesday 2nd of October in 2013 and on Wednesday 1st in 2014
In case those conditions didn’t happen, the above mentioned solution could not be applied.

Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana is looking forward to receiving a feedback (sic) from New York, London and Paris.
The most contentious part of this is the condition that asks New York to give London the extra day. Previously, London Fashion Week consisted of 5 women’s days and one menswear day, but most editors have been unable to attend London’s menswear day because it conflicted with the first day of Milan, so instead of giving London one of their days, Milan is essentially pushing their problem onto New York, who have already graciously moved their dates back an entire week. It’s always something, isn’t it? We’re looking forward to hearing that feedback as well.

At this point I think the CFDA should just ignore Milan. It is clear Milan is not about compromising but merely wants to be difficult for the sake of it.

I say at this point let the dice roll and see who comes out on top. For all this drama, Milan's designers better put on some fantastic shows because they will be eating proverbial crow after being so difficult.

I was actually on their side all this time and when NY agreed to make changes, I thought they would acknowledge the effort shown by NY. Clearly Milan is what most people would deem an ingrate.

Dates for London and New York Fashion Weeks have changed in order to avoid a schedule conflict.

NYFW will now take place from September 6 until September 13 this year while London will immediately follow from September 14 to September 18.

Moving LFW one week earlier than normal will help to avoid a clash with Milan Fashion Week which kicks off on September 19.

A statement from the British Fashion Council said: "Both committees remain committed to finding a long term solution that would see a confirmed Fashion Season where brands and designer businesses in all four fashion capitals (New York, London, Milan and Paris), can plan for the long term and when exceptional circumstances arise there is dialogue and empathy to find a solution that works for all."

Steven Kolb of the Council of Fashion Designers of America added: "We've been back and forth on this. People are anxious and need to know the dates. There's no value for the cities to compete. In the spirit of working together, London and New York are in agreement that we will go in the earlier period, but with the hope that the four cities will come out of this confusion and work together to plan future show weeks. We need to begin to look at the fashion season not as individual fashion weeks, but very much as a global business."

I don't understand a thing. Why skip MFW? NYFW is a mess and London isn't important enough...

London is 10x more interesting than New York. They have way more young talents with interesting point of views and a variety of aesthetics. I find it way more exciting than the stale New York.

I find good and bad in ALL of the major city's the fashion weeks, though my favourite is probably Paris. It's great that the NYC and London organizers worked together and found a solution for everyone. Hopefully they can all settle on how to go forward - cooperatively.

Hopefully they can come to an agreement that is actually contractually binding, unlike their nonsense of a gentleman's agreement previously where nobody could even prove such an agreement existed.

For the record I think Milan is hugely tacky. I would quite happily have missed it in preference to London which is far more interesting. It's just a shame money talks which is why the editors were always going to favour Milan.
