I'd just been waiting till celebcity opened up its forums again , so I could go take the high-res Moon Young Hee pics and so I did...

& what a wonderful surprise! The first , on the left, it's embroidery creating the texture The one on the right, I'm not really sure what's wrinkling it.. It seems to have little white dashes everywhere though--maybe it's also a form of highly dense stitching

As for Marni's and taffeta ..
I have some ideas now.. When I have time, I'm going to see if I can replicate the texture. Seems to be easily woven...

The second Moon Young Hee looks like some sort of puckered, multi-layered silk georgette or crepe, you can kind of see uneven bits of sheerness at the edges. I've seen a triple layered silk chiffon that looks similar to it...

Sorry about that I should have been more specific about which fabrics I was asking about

I'm curious about the triple layer silk...
Is there any reason someone would make a fabric that has three layers? In the one you saw, did you see if each layer was different from the other?

Well the fabric I saw had a sort of volume to it because of the three layers that had been attached. I know that it had little thread tacks everywhere to hold it together, but it might have been fused as well. Because of the way that chiffon is, very light and airy, combining three layers of it gave it a sort of density. It wasn't as sheer as one layer would be, and it had more weight to it.

That second fabric is definitely some kind of textured silk georgette or something. It almost looks like a seersucker texture.

Whatever it is, it looks beautiful.

That's interesting.. I was wondering if maybe it was woven as three layers since I have seen two and four layered fabrics. Tacking/fusing could be something else.. I used some fusible webbing a few weeks ago to join two fabrics-- surprised how stiff the resulting fabric came out to be. I put this chemical on the surface and noticed after drying how the liquid didn't seep to the bottom layer.. sort of saddened by that in a way. It makes me wonder if the webbing is breathable..

yeah it seems georgette, crepe (crepe de chine, etc) and chiffon are really sort of the same fabrics ,just in different weights ...

Identify That Fur

Hey
One of my tutors (who is just amazing) has brought me in this ancient coat for my project to do whatever I like with. Apparently he got it free with a bundle at an auction and he has others that he is going to bring in soon. I just wanted to know if anyone knows what the hell kind of fur this is:

It’s weird, and the pelts are really small. It might be due to it’s age but when you try to tear down the seams the pelt just tears instead… that’s how weak it is.
But it’s kind of curly, still a bit soft.
Can anyone identify it for me?

^that´s astrakan fur, from an african karakul lamb (probably), those unwanted tears happen because the pelts had dryed, that happens to furs when they aren´t preserved correclty (away from heat, in a proper fabric sac, etc...) it means that the pelts lost its natural oils that keep them "fabric" like, maybe if you take them to a furrier they could do something, but you could also sew a peace of fabric under the skin with a long stitch as shown in the picture tha will provide more strenght.

I'm afraid it's too late for the coat, it was falling apart and it's just being used by me for my work.
It's absolutely perfect for my project - based on Old Class, like pre-revolution Russia. Wonderful.

My tutor has brought in two other coats today, I'm pretty certain one is rabbit fur but don't know what the other one is. I shall take pictures of them and post them on here

This one is really very soft, I think it's rabbit fur, anybody know?

I think the top one is fox fur. I was going to do fur for my final graduate fashion collection and got loads of samples, and that looks just like fox, because it's long, and as you said, very soft.

Yes, my friend who gave it to me said he thought it was rabbit, but i thought it was very long for rabbit.

Okay, is there some kind of fur care thread or something? This one fur coat I have (First picture on post 48) is just malting like hell and I don't want it to malt
It's got to be like sixty years old or something, it's not really had a good life, is there any way of rescuing it? It really is nice.
Would love to know if it's capeable to rescue it or if it is doomed.

Is it mink?

it's hard to tell but it looks like a fine silk i have seen before

Ok well I believe I just saw this fabric right in front of me and touched it yesterday
It was silk chiffon

but the silk organza I have, I dyed it..so perhaps through that it lost its shine so sort of resembles this fabric in the picture. This girl where I work she was making a man's shirt out of silk organza and it was a lot shinier --I thought maybe even synthetic because it seemed to have metal sparks in it

Okay I'm back again with my fur I.D. questions!

Bought this scarf the other day and it's fur, but it's not really the softest - sorta spikey. As in, quite itchy on the skin spikey.
I want to say mink, but it's orange?
