Fall/Winter 2013.14 - One Of The Worst Seasons Ever?

In general I agree. I feel like there was not one single collection I went bananas for like I usually do during fashion week. There were some standouts (Proenza Schouler, No. 21, Celine, Marc Jacobs, Prada, and Balenciaga to name a few) but in general I feel like all the truly hideous shows outweighed the good ones.

I don't think so, we did have some very bad shows (I'm talking to you Slimane) but we also had shows that I think changed the history of fashion, Chalayan, Prada, Kawakubo, Ackermann, Philo, Owens they all did amazing things and brought a fresh vibe to fashion.

Not really. A lot of shows were disappointing, but also a lot of shows were amazing. Like every other season, honestly.

This is exactly how I feel. There were bad shows, but there were also good shows to make up for it. I liked the collections from Balenciaga, Prada, and ODLR this season more than I have in the past. Great new discoveries like Delpozo. Then there are collections that I can always count on personally liking, like Chanel, Valentino, and Valli. I feel like every season, different people say that it's the worst season ever. I find it incredibly difficult to rank entire seasons over other seasons.

it's kind of a reversal of fortunes really. for as dominant the conglomerate houses have been for several years, this has been the best season for the independents.....they have truly outshined the houses.

and i have to be honest,i feel like this has been the most promising i've witnessed for several years. i think we're in yet another transitional period right now...similar to that the fashion industry experienced in the late-80's into the 90's and in the late 90's moving out of the minimalism period....i think we may be on the verge of another revolution again and this season has done a lot to perpetuate that notion for me.

I agree. I've never been this disinterested by so many collections in one season.

I would also add Lanvin to the list of the great disappointments of this season, and Balmain of course

i already said this somewhere on the forums...
so- yeah, i pretty much think so...

and, just for the record...
in the 10 years or so that I've been posting on this forum, there has never been a thread like this...

threads about overall disappointment in fashion, yes...
but never a thread about a specific season being particularly bad...

there is a general malaise hanging over the fashion world right now...
it's stagnating...

everyone knows that things have got to change in order to move forward...
but everyone is afraid to go first...
major contradiction...

fashion is strangling itself...

If you are the type to only pay attention to the big fashion houses, then you will definitely be disappointed not only this season but season after season. I think the big fashion houses usually produce the most mediocre collections every time. But if you look beyond this kind of "fashion" and explore less well-known designers, there is always much to enjoy.

I can name many collections I've enjoyed this season: Chalayan, Jil Sander, Antonio Marras, Cedric Charlier, Lanvin, Comme des Garcons, Celine, Sacai, Yohji Yamamoto, Zero+Maria Cornejo, Margaret Howell, Undercover, Delpozo, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Mary Katrantzou, Vivienne Westwood, Tsumori Chisato. Not all equally of course, but there is always something to think about.

The best so far I'd say were Chalayan, Comme des Garcons, Sacai, Cedric Charlier, and Dries Van Noten. Those are five great collections. Not bad.

I saw some really nice collections:

• Dries Van Noten
• Ann Demeulemeester
• Preen
• Margaret Howell
• Rick Owens
• Chalayan
• Philip Lim
• Jil Sander
• Suno
• Thom Browne
• Haider Ackerman
• Junya Watanabee
• Yoji Yamamoto
• Comme des Garcon
• Sacai

But the monstrosity of the Tom Ford collection really takes the cake for one of the worst shows I've seen in recent years.

The collections that disappointed me this season have done the same in recent seasons [YSL was a complete joke but, like I said, after last season I wasn't expecting anything good], so it's not surprising. I wouldn't say it was across the board bad, there were so many good things for me that clouded the bad: Yohji, Ackermann, Prada, Chalayan, Hermes, Gareth Pugh, Prabal....all these things almost made me forget McQueen.

I do not think it was one of the worst seasons ever; but I did notice that very few designers produced memorable collections. With the exception of the very bad ones, very few looks stuck to my mind as representative of the season -- and I've followed pretty much everything.

Well, I think this season is minimalists season. O lot of minimalistic collections were superb, starting with Wang in New York and closing with Celine in Paris, while over-the-top and maximalist's designer weren't so good, but not all were so bad...

i actually think tom ford was one of the better ones this season, totally not something i would go for but at least he wasn't playing it safe like so many designers are doing..

everything was so tasteful and it's been heading in this direction for maybe 4 seasons now, maybe because of the bigger role fashion and the runway is playing in pop culture, hardly anyone is willing to offend anymore while that to me is what i look for in fashion; i want to be surprised and be forced to reevaluate my tastes every 6 months. while now i feel i'm at the same point i was 6 months ago.

Worst season ever for me Versace, Tom Ford, Balmain, Lanvin, Givenchy, Chanel. So disappointing. and then out of the clouds the beauty of Louis Vuitton today. Saved the whole season for me. I think Marc Jacobs gets too much acclaim and then he pulls out a stunning wearable collection. One of my favorites.

Forgettable at Stella McCartney, Chloe, Margiela, Balmain, lanvin, Ann Dem, Chanel, Vuitton, so yes, Paris was lousy this season.
Agree with some that Milan was fantastic: Marni, Antonio Marras, n21, Prada, Jil Sander.

Oh, thanks for these recommendations! I'll add Preen, Rick Owens, and Suno to my list  I'll just wait for Tokyo and then maybe I can give a more accurate assessment.

In the years I've followed the collections - about 8 or 9 years....I have never seen a season be so lack-luster.

I guess, there's always been that feeling after a bad NY-Milan stint that "At least we have Paris". This season, Paris was at least as bad as everything else.

^^exactly ilj...

let's think about it..
if there are about 50 shows per city...at least...
and you can only come up with 5-10 decent (not even outstanding) shows...
out of 200 plus shows...

well...
i think that pretty much says it all, doesn't it?

:ermm:
