would you agree that people in the 'alternative' music scene who say they are into 'anti-fashion' such as marilyn manson, chicks on speed, the sex pistols, alison goldfrapp ect. pretend to go against fashion when really they are being so individual it creates a trend?

if you do agree, please expand on your opinion.
your comments are greatly appreciated as it will help loads for my dissertsation.

if you have any comments about other artist concerning this subject feel free to contribute :D

I agree. Think thats how goth and other stupid stuff like emo started. I'm obviously not an expert on the subject and dead tired so I'm off to bed. I might write more tomorrow.

Do you mean against fashion as in they don't care what they look like?

Or that they shun anything trendy and 'fashionable'?

They don't really do either, imo. They obviously care what they look like and what they do is often 'trendy' although maybe not typical.

I do think they care about fashion. Like sakina said, they obviously care about how they look, their "image." So, I don't think they are anti-fashion... Even Marilyn Manson looks interesting sometimes. I've never heard actually that they go against fashion? I've just heard that sometimes someone will tell them what to wear for a shoot or music video, but they won't do it. Goldfrapp for example never uses a stylist.
Maybe you mean anti-trends rather than anti-fashion. Some of them don't follow mainstream trends. Anyway, if they are inspiring enough and have enough fans, of course they will create their own trend. Their fans will push that trend to mainstream. But sometimes it's hard to follow exactly their style. Goldfrapp dresses in a variety of outfits and not always a specific look (unlike the Sex Pistols) ...

Just about everyone cares about some fashion - it's just not necessarily what's in style or on the season's runway.
Especially in music: Artists develop their own musical style, and subsequently (or simultaneously?) their expression, their circle, their look. And that is fashion. You must not always marry trend and fashion and style; each holds a different place.
Just by virtue of developing your sound, you also develop your look. This involve what's en vogue, something anti-trendy, a stylist, no stylist, etc...

thanks

i just wanted to say thanks for your input...it was very insightful!

The fact that they are so 'anti-fashion' actually makes this more of a 'trend', everyone seems to be into it...like, I dunno-EMO, indie, "grunge" looks seem to be around alot. Also 'punk', well for that its more about how people find it cool and try to dress 'punk' or any other genre look for that matter, because its often the case that they don't really care too much about the music, or they just listen to it because its 'cool'...Even though for some people it's who they really are, there are stereotypes...or whatever the right word is. And yeah many of these people DO actually care about their 'anti-fashion'-ness because it's like their image and they want to keep it like that.
I don't remember who but it's a famous punk band for sure and they said for them its not about getting haircuts and dressing like 'punks' but about the music strictly, they're just into their music and they don't bother dressing anything specific, just what they would usually wear...like tshirt and jeans I think.
So yeah I guess there are various views on this..

This issue raises more interesting questions like

  • who/what is justified as being labelled Anti fashion/trend? and why?
  • refering to the punk movement, why was it that westwood thought 1977 was the right time for people to start rebelling against politics/fashion?
again, i would appreciate very much your opinions, whatever angle they may take, positive or negative its facinating.

could you possible add your age to your comment..if you dont feel comfortable with doing so thats absolutly fine!

thankyou so much, i gain alot of research for my dissertation from reading everyones views. :D
