Fashion snobbery

I can be a bit of a reverse snob when I see rich people who manage to make something expensive look cheap or who wear really dull outfits that have no personality to them at all. I also think of it as silly to spend a lot of money on an ugly bag, like a certain LV bag, just because it's exclusive. But really I don't like wasting time and energy on that.

i agree, to be honest Primark do have some great staple items like jumpers and what not, i wont dress 100% primark cos it can be obvious i see like 10 girls the same bag walking down oxford street.

I am a reverse snob, its like i go out and see a group of girls all with an LV bag and tacky everything else. for the money u could invest it in being unique

Haaa I really need to look closer at the runway as so I can see the details and see who is ripping off who
I went into this revolting shop in Bristol the other day selling nothing but handbags and everything in there was a take off of a designer bag, from quilted Chanels to YSL downtowns and Chloe Paddingtons, only all in plastic with slightly different logos haaa

Is that the Beyonce £14,000 Louis Vuitton bag you're talking about?

Yep. The same one. If I had the money for an expensive bag, I would one get because it's well made, I actually like it, and I could use it for more than one season. Spending that much money on that just for the sake of having something exclusive just seems very foolish to me and I wouldn't be impressed with anyone who can afford one and would actually buy it.

fashion snob: do you mean label snob or style snob?
(i know which one i would be...)

I sometimes have a bad feeling towards people
who look like they've tried so hard, buying items, stuff, blingbling etc (whatever it is designers item or not ) and who are obviously dressed to kill :o
who end up looking so uncomfortable in their outfits that it gives them an awful gaze of fake arrogance I guess to help them to pretend that they feel like bombs ... :p
I love bad-dressed people when they don't care about it...
It can makes them look actually quite attractive:lol:

^ That's interesting.. could you perhaps expand on that fake arrogance thing?

I think it's pretty sad to be a label snob.. the label should not make you blind.. if something is rubbish, then it is regardless of the label.

sometimes I have a positive feeling regarding some people that show arrogance, it can look lovely, in some cases...

Sometimes it just looks charmless to me, like in this case I've described:
being dressed to kill yet looking obviously uncomfortable gives something like a very unfortunate result, arrogance mixed with low confidence/discomfort looks a bit weird and charmless...

I can be the same way. I'll check peoples jean pockets if I'm walking behind them, if they have an LV I'll quietly inspect them with my eyes to see if they are real or not. But I only do it with complete strangers. I don't do it with my friends.

Its a bad habit, and its equally tacky for me to check those things as it is to own a fake bag, hah

But sometimes when you have knowledge of things, its hard to overlook them.

It reminds me of the scene in The Devil Wears Prada when Meryl streep explains to Anne Hathaway wear the color of her sweater came from.

I too often find bags or clothing items and think of exactly where the design was ripped off from.
Maybe its snobbish to some, but to me-it just means I know my fashion

Wow, people are so passionate about handbags. I once almost bought a really nice wallet. Then I started thinking about how dumb would I look if I had a $100 wallet that was empty? I'm not saying you guys don't have money, Lord knows I don't. But how can I purse be worth more than it's contents? Plastic doesn't count either...
Great point. I really want this $495 YSL wallet but I dont work so I would only be looking at the outside of it by myself and on the off chance that I would buy something else and pull it out in front of someone. I have a Chanel ponyskin coinpurse-type thing and I do get compliments on that and have had it 5+ years but it was only $100-something. It was on sale at a Chanel boutique. Hmmm dont know really why I'm posting this just identified with your post. Anyway ta!

Ugh, I find I don't give people wearing Hollister/Abercrombie enough of a chance. I'll see them wearing one of the two brands, assume they're massive jerks and move on. Unless, of course, they prove themselves to me really fast or if they make a point to be... cool.

I know it's bad, but I find judging by these particular brands of clothing tends to keep me from getting mixed up into a crowd I'd rather just laugh at. I do have friends who wear Abercrombie and the like, but the ones who don't are almost always more interesting to talk to and aware of their surroundings (world news, etc).

Anyone else with me on this? I hope I'm not the only one haha.

I think that's unfair; I have a strong disdain for A&F, but I don't think that people who wear it are lesser than those who don't wear it. A lot of people I know don't even care about brands, they just happen to visit the store and see something they like, and don't particularly shop there for the "image."

I don't really understand the correlation between brand of clothes worn and being more aware of one's surroundings -- I would definitely like to hear if anyone else has noticed this occurrence.

^I agree, it is unfair and I feel I should try to change. The thing is, so many people I know or knew are perfect examples of the brand vs. friendliness/intelligence correlation. Hopefully I'll meet people that will change my mind about this once I get out of high school, but for now experience is what makes up my mind.

By "aware of their surroundings," one of the things I meant was the fact that people spend insane amounts of money for an unimaginative logo shirt that was almost definitely made for a couple dollars in Thailand by a child or two... I understand that child labour is how these families make a living, but it seems to me that people could be buying well-made clothing for around the same price. I just don't get it; I think it shows ignorance.

I don't prejudge anyone for wearing A&F or Hollister or anything else for that matter. I have to admit the people I've meet wore A&F and Hollister have or had a certain image and want to up hold a certain image or just to fit into the image of all-American, clean and preppy.

Of course all aren't like the all-American, clean and preppy image but it's still associated with such.

todd:
What brands use non-child labour for a similar price?

Every single mall store brand that I know of, from GAP to H&M to French Connection, utilizes labour from the developing world. It's not that easy to get North American or European made items without paying an exorbitant amount (with the exception of American Apparel.)
Now with these articles surfacing in the past few months of Prada and others turning to China for their labour makes it even harder to find out who's really making what. I think with globalization and the increased profit motive, we will end up with very few brands truly producing everything in their original countries.

silk:
I don't know if I would even associate A&F with the preppy image; with their frayed denim, vintage looking tees, and wrinkled shirts, it's not nearly as clean cut as RL Polo - which I would hold to be the ideal "prep" brand.
A&F is more of a watered down quasi-surfer/prep style.

I'm with you 100% on this. It's mostly that the brands seem so snobby and it makes the people sometimes wearing them seem less friendly. I personally don't prefer their clothes because it seems so much like the people I don't want to talk to in school. I vote for self-expression and enjoy it 100%.
