I was referring more to people who scored goals to kick Argentina out but OMG!!! No, I have no idea which match in which championship you're referring to but i LOVE to watch it! Probably a friendly or something? Do you remember the names of the players involved? I want to google them. Now I'm just imagining the pinching of the noses and I'm falling off my chair :lol: My imagination is running riot!

Leonie, sorry but I'm so :buzz: that Liverpool are now level on points with MU. The Kops will pip the Red Devils to 2nd place yet! And I'm pleased that Morientes finally scored his 2nd goal for Liverpool. And such a beauty too. I  Stevie G. His goals are always nothing less than magnificent.

In other news, Chelsea have been crowned league champions. I watched the presentation ceremony.

Oh, there's bad news for England fans. Your talismanic Rooney broke his metatarsal in his right foot in the match against Chelsea. Okay, I'm not an England fan and I actually quite dislike Rooney but I feel rather badly for him. I saw him go down during the match and it looked really bad. This is a horrible, horrible time for such an injury. It's like England and their star players are under some "Metatarsal Curse" or something.

Roon faces World Cup KO

DOWN AND OUT? ... Rooney is carried off on a stretcher, his World Cup dreams on a knife-edge
By SUN ONLINE REPORTER
ENGLAND'S World Cup hopes have been blown apart by Wayne Rooney's KO. The Manchester United star is out for six weeks after fracturing the fourth metatarsal on his right foot.
Rooney's return date of June 10 is the day England kick off their World Cup campaign against Paraguay.
Coach Sven Goran Eriksson is prepared to name the striker in his squad - despite his obvious lack of fitness.
But Rooney, 20, faces a race against time to be ready for the summer showpiece in Germany.
Rooney was injured in a fall with Chelsea's Paulo Ferreira at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
He clutched his foot in agony and the immediate signs were that he suffered the same injury that curtailed his involvement at Euro 2004.

SICKENER ... Rooney hits the deck after clash with Ferreira

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was optimistic about the injury having spoken to United's medical staff at the ground.
But after boarding the team bus on crutches, Rooney headed straight to a private hospital in Manchester, where the injury was diagnosed.

For the love of The Beautiful Game, I wish him well.

^ England is screwed over. Owen, Sol, Cashley, all just got back from injury. Terry and G.Neville might be injured. This is actually good for Sweden :P but its a pity this didnt happen in the middle of the season so ManU dont suffer from it :ninja: dont kill me! But like bluestar I actually felt really bad for roon as he worked so hard in the game :(

*update*

Rooneys out for 6 weeks with a broken 4th metatarsal (sp?). Wayne Bridge is out with a hamstring injury so England could potentially be without Cole or Neville at the flanks. Owen has suffered a setback 20 minutes into his comeback. So I guess it'd be Crouch, Bent,or Defoe spearheading the attack unless Owen and Rooney recover just in time a la Becks in 2002. Basically Englands screwed

This article is freaky, written just days before Roons injury

^ That is freaky indeed!

I really feel for Rooney, it must be the worst thing for any player to pick up an injury just weeks before the World Cup starts.. :(

^ Exactly. You could see it written all over his face "Are my WC hopes dashed?" when he was stretchered of. But the sick thing was that he was one of those who took Terry out earlier. Poor ol' Terry was limping and hobbling about towards the end and he couldn't play anymore. It was good to see him walk out of the tunnel for the award ceremony though.

And that article IS freaky man!!!

^   Great find! "Enter £10,000,100.00 or more"..

Thanks for giving me a great laugh and sleep well amphrosyne! :flower:

As for the World Cup, i'll be cheering for my native country Brazil of course;) ...but since I'm living in Spain i'll cheer for them as well but I have to agree with you guys it doesn't look too rosy for England with all their injured players...esp. Rooney who was amazing two years ago in Portugal..it's definitely a huge blow for England:o

Yeah, I saw him throwing the medals to the crowd. He came out first, got a medal, threw it into the crowd and went back in and came out with the players. They all got their medals and the trophy was presented and Mourinho received another medal .... which he again threw to the crowd.

CRUTCH A SHAME ... Wayne Rooney leaving hospital yesterday
Owe no!

By SHAUN CUSTIS
ENGLAND will gamble on Wayne Rooney at the World Cup — and that means Michael Owen will be dumped if he is not 100 per cent fit. Rooney faces six weeks out with a broken metatarsal although boss Sven Goran Eriksson said yesterday he IS taking him to Germany.
But England will not risk two crocks so Owen faces the axe. Eriksson said: “I will bring Rooney to Germany and the World Cup, no matter what. I will give him every chance to be playing for England and I think he will do so.
“Even if the chances are small I have to give him the opportunity to be able to recover.
“Maybe he can be playing for us later on in the competition.”
There was also upbeat news from Leif Sward, England’s chief medical officer.
He said: “Now I know more about it I can say that we should be happy that this is not more serious than it is.
“If it’s not going to be more than six weeks then Rooney will play in the World Cup.”
But it could all spell disaster for Newcastle striker Owen, who felt more discomfort in his foot after playing for just 29 minutes at Birmingham on Saturday.
It was Owen’s first appearance since he broke his metatarsal on New Year’s Eve.

WORRY ... Owen departs

His family were distraught after the game and he was driven straight home to Cheshire by his father Terry.
Owen, 26, had an X-ray which revealed there had been no further damage. But England officials are seriously worried about his fitness.
As SunSport revealed last month, his problem has been accentuated by the fact the original screw which was inserted to heal his toe was too short.
England assistant boss Tord Grip said: “We have heard that Owen is not right and we might be without both our strikers for the World Cup.
“But they say Rooney will be out for five or six weeks and that might mean he only misses the first match.”

Inzaghi makes international return

Sunday, 30 April 2006e-mailPrint
AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi celebrated his return to form and fitness with two goals on Sunday and a place in Marcello Lippi's squad for a pre-FIFA World Cup training camp.
Impressive form
The 32-year-old, who has been dogged by a series of injuries over the last three seasons, has struck a rich vein of form recently, scoring 13 goals in his last 14 matches in Serie A and the UEFA Champions League. He got both goals as Milan defeated AS Livorno Calcio and was named in Lippi's 29-man party for a two-day training camp in Rome on Tuesday and Wednesday. The list excludes players from FC Internazionale Milano and AS Roma, who are playing in the Coppa Italia final.
'Extraordinary'
Inzaghi has clocked up 22 goals from 48 international appearances, but has not represented his country since October 2003. "I'm pleased. To come back into the national side after two years' absence is something extraordinary," he said. "I've always been out because of injury. Now I've got a big desire to play."

Hmm the Azzurri have a pretty strong squad this year. With Buffon, Fabio, Nesta, Zambrotta, Pirlo, ADP, Totti, Pippo, and Toni. Probably better than Brazil as the Italians have a way better defense.

^ Agreed. Luca Toni especially have been in great form throughout the season. On paper it looks great, but you never know with football. Just hope these players don't start going downhill form-wise.

Interesting article from football.guardian.co.uk

So when Beckham suggests England will benefit from having no players in the Champions League last eight this season it is tempting to assume the captain is talking his usual nonsense. Here is a Beckham quote from the same interview, just to prove that the usual nonsense is still going strong: 'We can't keep making excuses going into competitions because with the talent we have in our country we have to go into this competition with the aim of going as far as we can. No excuses and no regrets. If we're not good enough we're not good enough, but we know we have the players.'
Beckham can be forgiven his tortured convolutions because this is the phoney war period of the World Cup, and as captain he is required to talk up his team's chances without offering the fatal hostage to fortune of saying England will win. There will be plenty more of that sort of thing in the next couple of months. His suggestion that England will be fresher than they have been in recent tournaments is worthy of closer examination though. Yes, fitness and exhaustion have been problems in tournaments under Eriksson and if an extra week in which to prepare is of such vital importance to the England coach then a note excusing all players from end-of-season Champions League games must be valuable indeed. And yes, Greece did win the last European Championship with a fit and rested team of complete strangers to the Champions League.
Yet if the Champions League is any sort of measure of excellence then surely Beckham is clutching at the only available straw by declaring English absence to be a positive. Just look at the stats. No fewer than 19 Brazilians took part in the Champions League quarter-finals last week. That's six more than Italy could boast, and there were three Italian teams involved. France and Spain provided 19 players between them, and Argentina supplied seven. The English figure of zero will be improved if Sol Campbell or Ashley Cole recovers in time to play a part in the later stages, but that's about the only crumb of comfort on offer. Even those two players pose a question over Beckham's fitness theory. It is all very well to talk of fitness in summer, but three England regulars (Michael Owen is the other) are not just sitting out the Champions League, they are sitting out the season. As Amy Lawrence reveals on these pages, not all of the Brazilians in Champions League action have been impressing their audiences and coaches back home, though the general feeling is that it will be all right on the night.
Rested or not, can England say the same?

Full article: http://football.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,1750102,00.html

This whole thing about fitness. Is it better to get more rest? Will players truly be "fresher" or will they experience a dip in performance?
