Well I have to say I respect & at least like just about any girl of color who has made it in the modeling business. I've watched and went over many of their careers. That being said there are just those who stand out. My top 10:
Naomi-She has done the most not only of black models but most models. I loved her instantly and although she has her faults(we all do) at the end of the day she has made me the most proud. Whether it’s on the catwalk, a layout or cover it’s still a thrill for me after 15 years of me 1st seeing her. Although some have come close she was the first and is even said to be the only colorless model. She has reached a level that no other has yet broken through. She stood next to and even above Cindy, Linda, Christy, etc and held her own. She isn’t just a Supermodel she is a Superstar and it’s been that way for nearly 20 years non-stop. She is the only one who has made me proud, laugh, cheer, smile, worry, etc.
Iman-She is very accomplished as well, although she wasn’t really a commercial model until the 80's. I love her regalness(on & off the runway) an African beauty. A great runway & photographic model. She has kept herself in the public eye since the mid-70's and that is admirable. And she is married to Bowie!
Veronica Webb-The intelligent black model she came along in the mid-80's and was a runway sensation. She was also the first black model with a beauty contract(Revlon). All the while she kept busy in films and writing for magazines like Interview, Essence, etc.
Beverly Peele-From 1989 to 1995 she had a great career and she hit right away. Although, she was dubbed the next Naomi she survived by never giving up and forged a fashion career for herself. I still get nostalgic thinking of this once thin Lolita.
Beverly Johnson-The first real commerical black model. She definitely showed the ‘girl next door’ could be black. She was the first black woman on the covers of Vogue(1974), French Elle(1975) & German Cosmo(1983).
Naomi Sims-An unforgettable chocolate star, for a time she was one of the biggest models of the late 60's. She was the first black woman on the covers of Fashion of the Times(1967) and Life Magazine(1969). She did runway and was a successful print girl.
Brandi Quinones-She was a great beauty and the first black star of Chanel ads. Another short but great career.
Kara Young-A commerical print beauty of the mid/late 80's. She was on covers from Vogue to Glamour to Bride's and did things like Sports Illustrated and VS catalogs.
Donyale Luna-Short run but man she was a sight on the runways or in print. She lived fast and died young. She was the first black woman on the cover of any Vogue (British ed.1965) and was sketched for the cover of Bazaar(1965).
Karen Alexander-A great print & Covergirl and she did runway as well. She started in the mid-80's and now is back in Olay ads. I always loved this gorgeous brown girl. She took her job seriously but was professional and likable.
