Favourite Top African and Black Models

wow glad to see Khadija representin East Africa!! Unfortunately there seems to be no love lost between her and the fashion industry, I read an interview of hers some time back and she only had negative things to say abt the industry. Shes doin great though cant remember but shes an intellectual!!
As for Tyra whether we like it or not she is the black supermodel of the Ipod generation as Naomi was to the MTV generation.

I'm not so sure about that Urban Stylin:lol: if I would nominate someone outside of Naomi it would be Liya she's more new(Ipod) & successful as an actual model. Naomi has been going strong for decades she's never out of presence. Tyra modelled during Naomi's time,so she's not new and her time was totally 90s(for a few years). Thats like saying Paula Abdul is the Ipod generation singer or something just cause she's back in people's minds & on tv! But still its Paula Abdul I mean she was never taken seriously so who cares,IMO.
Ah,Khadija I don't know what to really say about her. But,hey as my signature suggests I can respect her for doing outside, true, selfless things to help people! But she did some cool things and got paid so I don't know if totally being 'whatever' about modeling is smart.

"She warmed me"-Bethann Hardison on well,Roshumba.

I'm loving those pics of Khadija, Omi! Thanks!

I did a bit of research, and I've confirmed that Tyra has been reported many times as the first black woman on the cover of GQ. Even when she's been interviewed:
A lot has been made about you being the first Black woman on the cover of GQ, the first black woman on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Do you feel its harder for blacks to break into modelling than whites?

Tyra Banks didn't think she was super-beautiful. However, the 5'10" beauty went on to become the first African-American to grace the covers of GQ and the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

Here's a 1997 article from Ebony:
Her recent appearance on the cover of the annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue created quite a stir and gave her the distinction of being the first Black woman to appear alone on the cover of the swimwear issue. Last year Tyra shared the cover with another model. In addition, she is the first Black model to be featured on the cover of the Victoria's Secret catalog, the women's lingerie and apparel catalog. In 1996, Tyra also became the first Black woman and the first model to be featured on the cover of GQ Magazine.

^Oooh, there were a lot of mistakes in that one. Kara Young appeared on a VS catalog before Tyra.

agree about Tyra :flower: , she is the most successful and popular black model of the late 90's and early 00's, now a well respected bussiness woman, simply the next Oprah!

Naomi is not a Mtv Icon, hello!

Oh,surprise surpise, not! What on tv?! Modeling no way,not even close to working models like Naomi,Liya, etc but moving on. And Oprah please not even close, one shouldn't disrespect O like that, either. MTV,icon what is that, besides its been around since the 80s?! Coming from America I don't even know what those comments mean,it doesn't register. I guess one would have to be around here to really know whats what.

Totally agree,I love this one here with David(1995)by Bruce Weber. Photo Source:scanned by me

How is Naomi not an MTV Icon, but Tyra is? Naomi was in several popular videos, moreso than Tyra. And I think people should make distinctions between what makes someone popular due to modeling, and what makes them popular due to other things. But I don't want to turn this into a Naomi v. Tyra thing.

Exactly she was on MTV far more,to be fair one could say Ty is that for UPN or whatever:lol:. But totally as a model there's no comparison like I said as far as campaigns, covers, edits, respect, etc than and now(oh yes and before),of the two its still Naomi but now you also have Liya making her way, etc. Thats pretty obvious to those who pay attention, its not largely arguable b/c its factual...SO LETS NOT TURN IT INTO MORE OF A THING:flower:!

let me suggest something, could we abstain from the Tyra VS Naomi battle people. I believe we all remember what happened in the Tyra thread. We all have our favourites but then again we all have something in common, we love black models. Look around the forum and tell me how many black models have threads.
Ok enough with the lecture...let the party continue

speakin of which I havent seen the beauty in my avatar well represented on the thread, miss Honorine Uwera..
