Favourite Top African and Black Models

I am a model and wow theres so many black models that i know alot of people hadnt really known, and what is great is that the black models we see before our eyes in this post are ones who come from all kids of backgrounds and countries with such a diverse appeal. All shapes and sizes, its just a shame for me to feel that still today not many black woman are celebrated as models to an even scale to the white models, its still very, "black girls = exotic and white girls = all rounders".
Then we see tv shoes such as UK top model, i dont know how many of you are from the uk but a girl called Edwina, a black girl, who came second was someone with alot of potential to rock the model scene, but whos paying attention.i work in the industry word does get around shes with FM models with players like bianca balti and tiu on the books, her talent is undeniable.

:woot: Thanks for all the old photos. Helen and Sonia are pretty!

I would have never guessed that was "Aunt Vivian" on the cover of Glamour. :ninja: I still had to look hard at the photo to place her, but I finally matched the freckles. Did they darken her skin for the cover? She looks much darker there than she did on TV.

No problem, I will post more photos.

For "Aunt Vivian" if anything it was the make-up, being that minorities don't have lots of choose from especially then, she was working for Glamour's white publication and they probably didn't know/have the right shade to put on her. Also tv didn't do many close-up to determine her actual shade, plus there's lights and tons of makeup. And if the B&W photo I posted had been in color I don't think we we've seen much of a difference. It isn't a drastic difference either way.

Have there been any notable new black fashion models lately? Like in the past few seasons? I'm sure there are some great new girls but I haven't seen any mentioned recently, I mostly see the beautiful originators and the current gorgeous top girls like the eternal Naomi and pristine Liya. Please let me know who the new girls are :D I can't open a magazine without seeing a fresh face from Europe or Brazil yet Liya and Naomi are still the black models I see most of the time.

That's a fine question! There is no one I can think of, well that is really doing things. Maybe Sepia will know?

Emanuela de Paula is a young Brazilian who is 16 or 17. She's getting a little publicity and doing well on the runways. She's also in ads for DKNY and Tommy this season. :flower:

Other notable mentions are Jaunel McKenzie and Sesslie Lopez I guess. That's all that I know of.

Isn't it weird how there are just a few top black models and asians?

Yeah, it's like models are not really the 'thing' anymore so all models have suffered but the black & minority girls have got it worst, twice over. If models were hot right now, I believe there would be more known blackmodels.

You know, since I've been collecting fashion pictures recently, I've been surprised to find out there were so many Black models, especially back in the 80s and 90s. All I really knew for a time were Naomi, Tyra and Iman. :ninja: ^_^

You know why there were so many?!
(1) Models were everywhere!
(2) There was already a proven Super during the time Naomi Campbell, so when she made it to levels never reached before, people were going to take a chance on more. So there came Beverly Peele,Brandi,Tyra,Lana,Georgianna, Roshumba,Stephanie Roberts, etc!

The only top black models of today that I know are Oluchi, Noemie, Liya, and Alek Wek.

Runway mainstays of the mid 80s-mid 90s, although these beauties didn't always make the editorials(especially Sonia, although Veronica has lots of print work, it was nothing compared to the many shows she did) they were always on the runways. Photo Source:scanned by me

I wonder why these dudes werent compared to Naomi, and they chose Tyra. Maybe it's cause of their resemblance.

What?!

I also like Noemie, but she's really more commercial than high-fashion, but she's great for L'Oreal and SI.
