Flip Flops

that pic kinda disturbs me! so they all decided beforehand to wear flipflops? Or they all, by absolute coincidence wore them? Either way they look badly dressed.

I think flip flops look fine most of the time, and can even look pretty nice with something fairly feminine and elegant, but these girls just aren't wearing flip-flop kind of clothes! They couldn't stand to just slip into a pair of shoes for a couple of hours? I do find it bizarre!

I'd say never, ever, to work. Other than that, I suppose they're okay. To be honest the sound of someone walking near me in flip flops is like nails on a blackboard. Most people who wear flip flops never pick up their feet.

Cindy663 is right, I heard that they are going to auction off the flip flops to help a child with a brain tumor, so what is wrong with that? Please get all the information before criticizing someone for his or her actions.

I checked the July Vogue when I got home to find out who/where was wearing the flip flops (damn age and brain lapses). It was Elle Macpherson at the Costume Institute Gala at MoMa. And off topic, her gown was gorgeous!

Fantastic they are turning this bit of bad publicity on themselves around to help someone. This is not the issue here. It's a fashion forum, so we're discussing that, but hope they make lots of money for the child.

I personally would not consider flip flops for such an occassion. But I can't see a reason why what they did was "wrong". They are college athletes. They are just obviously not concerned about shoes and style. I don't find this offensive. They do look kinda dumb and sloppy but so do a lot of people. I don't see it as a crime. They aren't visiting the white house because of their stellar choice of footwear. It's probably because they're really good lacrosse players so that's what's more important in this situation.

wow! what they were wearing were totally inappropriate
i know it's summer...but still......

what were they thinking!?!?!?
i mean come on... its the whitehouse..
and the ones they are wearing arent even dressy flipflops.. and who cares if they are auctioning off the flopflops they wore?
they could have worn nicer shoes and could have auctioned those off too- couldnt they?
:(

Some things are just inappropriate for a certain occasion and I think it's deeper than just about the clothing, it shows respect too. Wear black to a funeral, don't wear white to a wedding unless you're the bride...don't wear flip-flops to meet the president. I think it was selfish.

i think they are ONLY appropriate at the beach or where no one can see you.

Their shoe choices were bad bad bad....I'm glad that they're turning it into a positive thing by raising $ for charity, but it was still not appropriate at all.

I agree with the poster that said this was an issue of respect. People will wear flip flops to their grandmother's funeral these days. I mean, come on, how often to you get to go to White House and get commended by the President for winning an NCAA Championship?!? Put a little thought into your appearance!

I think they look cute, but for an outdoor picnic or brunch....not this event.

People just don´t get things and that´s what´s bad. Like wearing jeans to a wedding.
It´s not like it´s wrong to wear flip flops but for and event or if you have to be presenteable, it´s not the kind of thing to choose. It´s just not the same as wearing sandals.
Those girls in the pic seem like they had all the time and that they tried to choose their clothes and then opted for a footwear that just doesn´t match.
Since they went for the flip flops, they might as well worn a tank and some jeans :D

You americans need to start worrying about more important things...

I don't think any of us are "worrying" about it....it's a fashion discussion.;)

It wasn't really so much directed to people in this thread, but more to american media that make "news" of it. Is that what they think people should worry about?

what else do you expect from those fashion-inept "sorority" girls? i'm surprised they left their pukka shell necklaces at home. most of their outfits are atrocious as well from the looks of it.

however, if it was to intentionally disrespect the president, then I'm all for it!

but IMO it's not really a matter of respect, it's more a matter of being fashion-wise it's a major faux pas!

I am behind in my Vogue reading, but I just finished July's issue. For the life of me I can not remember who, but someone wore a goreous gown with flip flops to an event.

Elle McPherson, I think. :)

That is a HUGE insult to the president to wear flip-flops, it's a sign of disrespect. Christ, you might as well wear a garbage bag while you're at it. Don't their parents teach them anything? It's those kind of people that makes me ashamed to be an American.

Wow, were you being sarcastic? That reaction seems really extreme to me. I mean, honest to god, you must be kidding? Frankly, I can think of a thousand and one other, much more significant, reasons to be ashamed to be an American at this time. College girls wearing flip flops in the white house ranks NOWHERE near them.

I read all these posts in this thread and I STILL don't see the big deal. I mean, clearly these girls don't have a whole lot of fashion sense, they picked blasé casual-dressy outfits and teamed them with blasé footwear. And I STILL don't see the difference between $20 payless chunky heeled vinyl sandals and rubber flip flops with some rhinestones super-glued on. And looking at the picture, the president doesn't seem particularly distressed over their flip flops either (I could make a lot of jokes right now about the president but WON'T. takes much self-control.). And if everyone is so upset about the president being offended by these girls' flip flops, and he doesn't care, then it really is a moot point. Once again, I think he has more important things to be worried about, at least I HOPE is more worried about them than these girls' flip flops.
