Garage Magazine Issue 19 : Michaela Coel by Liz Johnson Artur

Looks like a Nina Simone album cover that never was, I love it! The simplicity, the beauty, the colours.
Gabriella Karefa-Johnson is such a force, and I hope we'll see this level of creativity from Liz when she shoots for UK Elle again.

I am slightly biased, as I think Michaela is one of the most incredible people in the world, but this is incredible.

She’s brillant but this doesn’t capture her beauty.

She's just so camera-friendly. I loved that golden finish and that they didn't try to make her lips any different.

I have admittedly only watched some bits of Chewing Gum and I May Destroy You, which is good (for the most part) and feels very much about now, but the hype does get a little bit much.. sort of like when Lena Durham first came out 'ugh yes, Girls is brilliant, but have you seen the ~masterpiece~ that Tiny Furniture is?!' (and you'd see it and it was insufferable but saying it felt like pure troll-ish antagonism ). Time will tell where her career goes, she's an actor but would love to see her behind the camera at least in a one-time project and exploring rich characters like the ones she created for this series but less as pets or decor..

This girl has cheek bones so sharp, they could cut you when you touch them! I saw that cover of her on Sight and Sound Magazine and I thought “wow, her face could rival most of today’s working top models”. I like this cover but I hope that someday, a magazine would take advantage of her photogenic ability to transform her into a more glamorous get-up.

I would like to know her feelings about the cover. I can see how I would like it from a 70s film Grace Jones perspective. On the other hand...
