OCEAN Grove artist Jodie Candy has been nominated for a prestigious national art prize for her portrait of Australian supermodel Gemma Ward.
Candy was this week announced as one of 25 finalists in the The Metro 5 Art Award for her untitled painting, which is a dramatic 1.5m by 1.5m oil on canvas portrait of Ward.
The 28-year-old's painting was chosen from more than 300 entries from around Australia.
Candy said Ward was the perfect muse.
"I'm fascinated by Gemma's face because it has almost an alien-like quality about it. It's also incredibly versatile and she can achieve a totally different look just by using different make-up or hair pieces," she said.
"Her face has a chameleon-like quality which is just amazing. I set out to portray her in just this way and deliberately didn't name the work, or put her in any particular setting, because I wanted to draw out and emphasise that air of ambiguity she has."
Candy has been painting since high school and said she was in "pure shock" when she was named as a finalist.
"I've always been arty and I'm just coming up to two years working professionally," she said.
"I actually find it hard to sit down and just watch television, I'm always sketching or doodling."
Candy's work will be exhibited at Metro 5 Gallery, 1214 High St, Armadale, from June 10 to July 6.
The winner of the prize will be announced by former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett at Metro 5 on June 24.
