^But nobody cares about shifts in beauty in the real world. But they do care about a musical movement involving bands from one country which ended up creating the atmosphere than changed a conservative government into a labour one. The glory days of New Labour with Noel Gallagher charging up to Downing Street. Kate just happened to represent that. The concept of London is very attractive even to those who aren't Londoners. There are Americans on this board who have confessed to being obsessed with Britpop and so many people who want to move to London (the 10 things about you thread). I am not sure Perth can make Gemma because it took Gemma for people to notice Perth.

Oh, I still think that Gemma can be "the face of globalization" in the 00s, without coming from a hip city. I'm not saying that she will ever be as iconic as Kate - Kate is the best fashion icon since Twiggy - I'm just saying that Gemma, IMO, is the current new model with the greatest chance of becoming an icon and in that sense she is "the new Kate". But who knows....

btw, of course people don't CARE about the change of beauty ideals....they just unknowingly eventually succumb to it.

Gemma doesn't really have that special something that Kate seems to have. Gemma just seems so bland. But a pretty girl nonetheless.

There is always a girl to come onto the scene, a girl that has a look no one would call model, and she ends up being a supermodel. I doubt anybody who was a fan of the 'Trifect,' or even fan of the 'Top Five,' would have thought Kate would have made it so far. Kate is short. She has bad teeth and leads a very rock and roll lifestyle- everything they don't want in the industry. But she also has that something, the X factor.


Gemma is a supermodel in the making. She looks like no one else, which allows normal people to recognize her. She is a very pretty girl, but not on the Erin Wasson/Valentina Z. level of 'So Pretty She's Boring'. And to top it off- the girl can take some pretty good pictures. In the day and age of 'edgy' meaning 'looking like a dollbaby', Gemma was the first (Twiggy was the first 60's waif, Kate the first heroin chic, Iman the first African goddess) and she will always be the best remembered, even if some new trend comes along.

As much as I like Gemma, I honestly don't think she will ever be widely know outside the fashion world (unless she moves into acting or something). I think the general public finds her too "odd" to be beautiful and she doesn't have tabloid or trendsetting appeal such as Kate.

Gemma is part of the new generation of model.... I don't think Softgrey's point is she will take over Kate or anything, but as in MAKING it just as big eventually... if anyone, I think Gemma has high chances of making it as big, much more than Daria in my opinion....

Gemma is very different, and no matter how many shows she did or opened, she's still intriguing, she's good enough to play different roles during photoshoots....

She's been getting major campaigns seasons after season, Prada, YSL, Calvin Klein.....

I feel as though you guys are giving Kate more credit than she deserves. She was a model not a political activist or life saving doctor. I agree that Gemma is the new Kate but not in the ways everyone is arguing. I don't think Gemme represents a new rock and roll attitude or whatever laurels you guys are giving to Kate. To me she is the face of the new generation, new designers, new sensibilities, new ideas. She is THE model for that. I look at Kate and as great as she is she's not representive of the progressive aspects of fashion...that was 10 years ago for her. Look at her in the Dior and Chanel ads...they reek of the 90's.

When I was looking at a spread Gemma did with Nick Knight for the october issue of I-D it really made me fall in love with her. She looked so contemporary and so right. As a young person getting into the the fashion world I can associate more with her than with Kate. I don't think Gemma could fill Kate's gap if she were to leave but that's not the point. I think the idea is that she is representing something that had not existed before.

but who really knows they are just models and I have no idea what they are really like beyond photos.

As far as her mainstream appeal I think she would be fine. I mean Alek Wek is not a conventional beauty and I know more people who can recognize her than kate moss

It's true that if Gemma ever makes it real big, I highly doubt she'd be in the tabloids since she's not the rock and roll party kind of girl (from what we know up till now). And that's not a bad thing at all.

the only thing the designer likes in her because she makes the clothes look good with her super - plain face. Gorgeous models with big personality like Lima, Balti and the rest pulls the attention away from the designs and draws the eyes towards their faces. That's why the designers united in the 90's and stop the supermodel power. Supermodels who became bigger than the designers. The designers themselves stopped this and thats why we have Kate, Gemma

lol. OMG. How differently people can perceive things. I would reverse the role of Gemma and Daria in your statement. Daria is the one who has no warmth or emotion - and oh I like her in her dominatrix state - but to speak of warmth - OMG that's amusing

And what is this about Gemma or Kate being plain Lima and Balti are quite charming but they're not photogenic - Kate has the most photogenic face I've ever seen. The structure of it is perfect for the camera.

Yack. I am gonna yack. No one can EVER be Kate Moss. Cool as Gemma may be, she can never be the coolest chick in London. Kate Moss defines a time, a political era -which is what Britpop/Britmania was. Gemma is just another model with a pretty face.

I couldn't agree more. Also, Kate made the super skinny waif look cool again after Twiggy, which still hasn't died almost two decades later. I have a feeling people are going to get tired of the 'doll' look really soon. Despite this, Gemma's still great a model.
