SIL - I agree with you quite a bit - but now we come to an interesting question: Is Cindy Crawford an icon? She was a "beauty revolutionizer" - but I don't think that she had strong pop/rock connotations (except that she was channeling Gia big time of course) or being the face of a socio-economic movement.

But Cindy, Christy, Naomi, Linda and Claudia as a power group symbolised 80s excess, the 'greed is good' phenomenon, the yuppie culture. It was a pretty powerful movement as capitalism spiralled out of control. Because of that movement, socialism which suffered from what had happened in the Soviet bloc, had the chance to regroup because people realised that it was still relevant. It paved the way to the more caring, liberal ideals we hold now.

for Gemma to be the new Kate, that would mean that not only fashion Connoisseurs would know who she is but also most of the average joes (fashion wise) would have to be able to recognize her.
I know for sure she is not there yet, I am not so sure she will be....

When I saw this thread I was like WHAT!!!!??

NO NO NO and NO Nobody ever is gonna be like Kate I mean to be like kate you need to have a great style be one of the first supermodel short have a really sexy face etc etc she is the goddess of models (to me at least) maybe im saying this because im a huge fan of kate she's one of my fave models if not the one I also love Gemma I don't have nothing against her but she is other kind of beauty she has a sweet face (baby doll) supermodels are known because of her lifestyle a supermodel is someone that is always on party's and stuff a thing that models on this times don't do they just do her job and thats all but supermodels where everywhere on party's kate still does like someone said maybe the supermodel thing is not gonna come back again but who knows maybe fans of gemma see her as the best model ever and like a supermodel but to me it's not gonna be the new kate they have nothing in common they both are really different as in personality, physic, all both are gorgeous but in different ways

I love Gemma, but she is far too odd looking to ever appeal to a mass audience the way that Kate did.

I agree:flower: :flower:

So there we go. The consensus is: Gemma is Gemma and... erm Kate is Kate. We're like those scientists who spend ages making theories and calculations to prove that a is a

I think Kate Moss is an icon, and there are similarities in their careers that I see. Gemma has the potential to become an icon but I don't think she's the "new" Kate Moss. I think she'll be a model in her own right.

I don't think Gemma is the new Kate Moss just because each of them is completely unique. I understand in the sense of fame, that yes they both have reached a level higher than most models do but Kate is also known for her bad girl image while Gemma does not really evoke much personality (please don't take offense, she's merely more reserved). It's really comparing apples and oranges. To be honest, I'm not sure just how long Gemma's fame can last. I definitely cannot picture what she'll look like in her 30's but Kate on the other hand has a face that she could age into. I'm not sure if I'm making my point clear but I think Kate's popularity will have lasted longer than Gemma's.

Lashings of beauty
Gemma Ward was the It girl of Paris Fashion Week, appearing on the cover and inside a special Time magazine style and design issue. The 17-year-old from Perth had a new look for the photo shoot reminiscent of the 1960s model Twiggy - plenty of kohl and artfully painted-on lashes. At the Chanel show, Ward was the last model out, striding down the runway in a camellia-adorned chiffon dress. On the final day, the Bambi-like beauty appeared for YSL and Louis Vuitton. Ward's extraordinary success at such a young age must put pressure on her family and makes one wonder what will become of her in 10 years. None of the runway models in Paris looked older than 18.

Gemma Ward on Chanel
"There's a lot of anticipation for this show. Everyone is dying to see what Karl comes up with next. And you don’t need to walk on the runway to see the production that is put forward. It's always an amazing, dramatic event."
