Balloon lifts off
THE man behind the scenes of the hit Australian films Strictly Ballroom and Looking For Alibrandi has secured the backing of Mel Gibson's Icon Films for a new locally-made feature.
"It's the first time Icon has taken an Australian film for domestic release, and they're taking it world-wide as well,'' producer Tristram Miall said on Friday.
Miall is the producer of The Black Balloon, an emotional family drama, which was written by Sydney-based Elissa Down and Jimmy Jack.
The film, which begins shooting in January, will star Australian model Gemma Ward _ one of the biggest names on the international modelling circuit at the moment _ and, hopefully, Toni Collette.
"When Elissa said she wanted Gemma, I'd never heard of her and was hesitant until I found out who she was,'' Miall said.
"Eighteen months ago, we got her into a studio for a three-hour screen test, and she was just fantastic.''
A leading role has been offered to Collette and she is trying to work out her schedule to fit in the project.
Asked if The Black Balloon was a low-budget film, Miall laughed and said it would cost about the same as Strictly Ballroom.
"You don't get Toni Collette for a couple of mill, I'm afraid,'' he said.
