Move over Gisele, Gemma is on the rise
23rd July 2007, 6:30 WST
Five years ago Nedlands schoolgirl Gemma Ward was sitting among a gaggle of girlfriends at a Perth fashion show politely declining an offer to join a modelling contest.
The fact that the 14-year-old was wearing an ill-fitting coat splattered with mud from her aunty and uncle’s farm and not a skerrick of makeup meant she was more than a little surprised that a stranger would try to persuade her she could turn heads.
“My friends were like, ‘Hell, yes!’ and they forged my mum’s signature and pushed me in front of the cameras,” Ward, who is now based in New York, told Teen Vogue.
The former Perth schoolgirl was last week anointed one of the world’s richest young models at the tender age of 19.
US magazine Forbes featured her among the modelling world’s 10 top earners, raking in $3.4 million a year, behind supermodels Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss, who earn $37.7 million and just over $10 million respectively.
Although Ward could probably retire at an age when most would begin working, she is still described by industry representatives as down to earth and a pleasure to work with.
The manager of Vivien’s Perth, Chris Fox, who first spotted Ward, said: “She has been a dream to work with, polite and well-spoken, and she was perhaps even a little blase at the time because she had wanted to be an actress, not a model.”
Propelled to stardom because of her porcelain skin and round baby-blue eyes known to emit that enigmatic zombie-like stare, Ward has featured on the covers of US, French and Italian Vogue and been the face of brands as diverse as Calvin Klein and Prada.
Her star continues to rise with roles in two movies released this year — The Black Balloon, starring Toni Collette, and The Strangers, in which Ward appears with Liv Tyler.
But at 19, her curves are creating an entirely new look.
“She’s not a little girl any more, she’s evolving to be a young woman who has a whole new appeal,” Ms Fox said.
