George Clooney Says Darfur Involvement 'Greatest Failure of My Life'

George Clooney is promoting his new film "The American," about a hired killer hiding out in Italy as he prepares for his last job.

The "hiding out in Italy" part mirrors his personal life, as Clooney spends much of his down time in a luxe villa in the small town of Laglio with Italian girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis.

But Clooney, 49, told The Sun newspaper that apart from his charmed life, one world event with which he has become intimately involved -- the ongoing genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan -- remains a personal albatross.

"I've been honored to be able to lend my celebrity to help wherever I can, especially on behalf of the United Nations," he said in a wide-ranging interview. "But in the case of Darfur it's been the greatest failure of my life."

Clooney and his journalist father Nick smuggled cameras into the Darfur refugee camps four years ago to show the impact of the civil war that is estimated to have killed more than 300,000.

Since the, Clooney said little has changed.

"With other people, we've been able to get a lot of attention focused on the terrible situation there and nothing has changed. It's very frustrating."

Cloney received a humanitarian award at the Emmy Awards last Sunday for his work, on behalf of the earthquake victims in Haiti and Hurricane Katrina victims on the Gulf coast.

"It's embarrassing,” he told FOX411.com backstage. “You don't want to be awarded for doing what you're supposed to be doing."

George Clooney: `Italy changed me`

Discovering La Dolce Vita had a profound effect on George Clooney the actor has revealed.

The 49-year-old heartthrob has said that he made the choice to splurge on his Italian lakeside villa for financial reasons.

'It was a pure investment decision. I thought maybe I would spend a few weeks vacationing there,' he told The Sun.

But then the Ocean's Eleven
star fell for his adopted homeland.

'I realised how beautiful life was in Italy and how it really helped calm me and not feel so pressured,' Clooney enthused.

'I could also work very productively and bring my friends over to keep me company.'

The Academy Award-nominee explained that living in the small village of Laglio offered him a chance to escape the glare of Hollywood stardom.

'My life over there takes me away from the circus aspects of being a celebrity and that's a pleasant change for me,' he said.

It takes a lot of courage and b*lls on what Mr. Clooney and his dad did in Darfur. I hope things get better for the people there. Mr. Clooney and his dad deserve that award.
I LOVE his villa, it's beautiful. :flower:

George Clooney welcomes ageing, cites not being typecast as benefit
September 17, 2010 6:27 AM EST

George Clooney is not vain, he just happens to look good, so good. At least that's what Clooney implied. In a recent interview, Clooney said he is not vain, and welcomes ageing.

George Clooney thinks his advancing years mean he is offered more diverse acting roles.

But then again, if you happen to age like George Clooney, won't you welcome it? Some say he is like a good wine, as Clooney add up years he gets better, as far as the roles he gets, and of course, there's the acting.

George Clooney thinks his advancing years mean he is offered more diverse acting roles. He told Sueddeutsche Zeitung, a Germany-based newspaper that he has never been typecast because he lets himself age.

"That's down to lack of success. No, really. Being hugely successful in a certain role or genre comes with the risk of being typecast. So far I was lucky - in moderation," Clooney said.

"The second reason is my advanced age. I'm literally aging before your faces I'm not vain though. I welcome it, the ageing. Otherwise I would have coloured my hair by now."

Of course I'm not offered the role of the romantic hero that often anymore, but at my age I get to do more and more character roles."

Clooney now stars in a new movie The American which opened weakly at the box office but quickly picked up to become a top grosser.

George Clooney gets the locals all excited as he and girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis visit her parents in their Sardinian village

Last updated at 11:08 PM on 17th September 2010

It's not every day that a big Hollywood star decides to drop in on a tiny Italian village.
So it's no wonder that the people - especially the women - of the town of Tresnuraghes in Sardinia got a little over excited when George Clooney arrived on their doorstep.

The actor was in the town with girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis to pay a visit to her parents Cesere and Bruna at their home.

Bonjourno, Signor Clooney! George shakes a lady's hand as she chats to the actor during his visit to Tresnuraghes, Sardinia to meet his girlfriend Elisabetta's parents

But on the way he was accosted by the locals eager to shake his hand or have a picture taken with the Oscar-winning star.

And George was only happy to oblige as he chatted away, signed autographs and posed for photos.

At one point, the 49-year-old was surrounded by giggling women who couldn't contain their delight as they chatted away and swooned over the heartthrob.

Later one, Elisabetta was seen up at a window looking as though she was gesturing for some quiet, possibly to calm down the excitable fans below.

George, 49, and Elisabetta, 32, who have been dating for just over a year, have been in Italy since last week having flown out to her motherland from Los Angeles.

Last Sunday, they celebrated her 32nd birthday with a slap-up meal at the Navedano restaurant near Clooney's Lake Como home.

They were joined by Elisabetta's brother Luigi, his girlfriend and some other friends.

Gracious: Clooney looked more than happy to spend time with the local people

But today, the couple headed to Sardinia so Clooney could meet her parents.

They live in the town of Tresnuraghes, which is just a few miles away from Sassari where Elisabetta was born.

There has been much speculation surrounding their relationship, especially about Clooney planning to propose to Elisabetta, even though she admitted the chances of that happening were slim - and she didn't care.

Speaking to Us magazine, one of her friends said: 'Elisabetta is realistic and happy. Love is what’s important to her.'

Clooney's scared of guns

Sep 17, 2010, 11.17am IST

Hollywood actor George Clooney has confessed he is "scared" of guns even though he has regularly used them on screen.

The 49-year-old actor has become accustomed to handling firearms, both through his movie work and his upbringing in Kentucky, but insists he still feels uncomfortable around them.

"Guns, rifles - there's something frightening about them. Still. Although I've grown up with them in Kentucky and although I've had to use them in a lot of my films. I've learnt to use them, but I'm still scared of them," contactmusic.com quoted Clooney as saying.

The "Men Who Stare At Ghosts" star also insisted he isn't worried about getting older or losing his looks as he thinks his advancing years mean he is offered more diverse acting roles.

"That's down to lack of success. No, really. Being hugely successful in a certain role or genre comes with the risk of being typecast. So far I was lucky - in moderation," he added.

"The second reason is my advanced age. I'm literally aging before your faces I'm not vain though. I welcome it, the ageing. Otherwise I would have coloured my hair by now.

"Of course I'm not offered the role of the romantic hero that often anymore, but at my age I get to do more and more character roles," he said.
