Giambattista Valli for H&M

I wanted a Jean Paul Gaultier for H&M and we got Giambattista Valli...
Oh well...

These things are so predictable. Goes on sale, selling for 3x the value on eBay an hour later. Why not just release more.

It's so obvious they couldn't get Valentino so they went for Giambattista since he's been doing similar VOLUMINOUS stuff, it's literally the same way of making a choice that they went for in 2017 with Erdem that is so close to Gucci in their eyes.

However, the first drop of Valli x H&M wasn't desirable at all. The womenswear looks pretty cheap (because it's so tricky to do this kind of clothing with cheaper fabrics) and the menswear is so basic. Of course everything sold out in an hour, but as a whole I feel like this collab is going to be a real non-event.

Really doubt whether this line will be a success, nobody appears to be shooting it.

Menswear looks very Ricardo for Givenchy...

I literally didn't care about this until I saw the menswear and now I am oddly here for it.

Yeah, there is something about it that feels very Ricardo Givenchy / Versace. I wish some of the pieces didn't have that odd "I  GBV" logo....

Burn the animal print and I don’t hate the rest.

I wouldn’t buy any of this though.

For me, the men's line is a confirmation that Valli shouldn't consider menswear for his own label. It's not atrocious, but it's just so nondescript. The kind of clothes you can find in any major city in the world, at any time of the year. And I rolled my eyes hard at his cop-out excuse in WWD (can't post because it was for members only) - something to the effect of he doesn't think of menswear in traditional masculine terms that's why the line is so fluid. Translation: he basically just took some concepts and ran them through a 'male' facsimile in terms of tailoring. Nothing wrong with that if you're Sies Marjan who can do it as a diversion, but if it's your first foray into the market (and likely your only one), it just comes across as a bit shoddy.

The women's line looks great, however. It's cohesive and very much what he's about. Most of those lace dresses don't look high street. I'd be worried if I were a Valli regular customer who paid thousands of pounds for originals because these 'replicas' look very solid.

Doubt whether he will get the same marketing oomph Donatella and Olivier got from this collab though.

I want a few of the men's pieces.

Kinda hate that he used yellow thread for that embroidery and not gold. Looks cheap.

Feels very nostalgic to think back and remember the excitement these collaborations once evoked. The Lagerfeld one, of course, but also the ones from Stella, V&R, Cavalli... it was just so different at the time, and felt very special for someone living in a town where this type of fashion was hardly even discussed (and obviously not available).

However, I feel like they have diluted this concept somehow, or maybe this whole thing feels a bit dated now. Frankly, I couldn’t name the last five or six collaborations to save my life. I prefer the type of collaborations Uniqlo did with Jil Sander and now with other designers... something that has a point of view and not just a cheap version of the original.

I tried even though I wasn’t crazy about a lot of it. It let me put two jackets and underwear set in my cart but then when I went to checkout the jackets were sold out.
Wasn’t that disappointed and thought the prices were kind of high for what it is
