Gisele Bundchen

i think another aspect of why Gisele is unreachable is that the sheer amount of money that she earns is sooo above and beyond all the other models. even Kate Moss, in her biggest year, earned $14 million --- less than half of what Gisele earned the same year.

and the fact that everyone recognizes her as such a huge money-maker continues to increase her fame and the general public's respect for her.

BUT - a huge portion of this money comes from the South American market (Brazil, specifically). and this has everything to do with timing and capitalization of that blossoming market. Gisele was the first and the most fluent in English and so the most important of the "Brazilian Invasion" of models in the early 2000s. and so she became iconic in that country which was itself entering a phase of massive economic boom and rising international influence. Gisele was the face that ushered that country onto the global platform. TIMING.

^^ You pointed out some really great facts.

Gisele's relevance goes beyond her high fashion campaigns, runway appearances, editorials with the best photographers, appearances in Men's lifestyle magazines, beauty/fragrance and commercial work. It's deeper than that and all the comparisons are very simplified. If people think Gisele is huge in the USA and Europe and the rest of the world, wait until they see the reactions in South America/Brazil. She's seriously an icon there--almost like Madonna status.

^Your argument is a fallacy in itself. You are comparing very different times in modeling. This thread is not about Karlie and that wasn't the intention of my comment. All I was saying is Karlie is pretty much in the 1999/2000 period of Giseles career and it can go one of two ways...

Models might not be able to snag bundles of US Vogue covers today but some, like Karlie and Kate Upton, are receiving the modern equivalent. The path has changed but the game will never change. Fashion needs a Gisele to come along every other generation or it would become as stale as it is now. The stars have aligned and we are just waiting to see who will take the ultimate prize. ;)

I agree to a certain extent. Of course the industry will always have its biggest, most in demand model. It's always been like that, but it makes me laugh when people start looking for the next Gisele because a successful model of that magnitude will never happen again. It just won't. It's impossible. Not even the Supers at their peak could compare to Gisele's success. Even if you say that Karlie and Kate are the modern equivalent they still haven't got a smidgen of the success Gisele had at their age. I mean, Gisele was everywhere. At 20 Gisele already had a $20 million contract with VS. These girls are still waiting for a freaking Vogue cover. They're still waiting for a major contract. To compare anyone today to Gisele is just laughable. It's such a corny thing to say, but she's in a league of her own. Personally, I don't even get her appeal. She's a great model, but I look at her and I just think that there are so many girls in Brazil who are a million times more beautiful. Still, that doesn't keep me from marveling at her success.

I'd say karlie is definetly on her way..DEFINETLY NOT SAYING SHES THERE NOW. 10 years from now I think its possible that she could have the same iconic status that gisele currently has..If theres any model out there currently who has any chance of becoming the gisele 10 years from now, I'd say karlie. Of course she could fade, and just go away, but if she continues the amount of work shes doing now, I think its quite possible she could get there.

^^ Well, to reiterate some of the points HappyCanadian made, Gisele was part of/created a type of social and economic change/movement/landmark. That's huge. Beyond Kate Moss huge and beyond Christie Brinkley huge. I'd go as far and say Gisele is in the league of Michael Jordan, Madonna and Michael Jackson. Gisele is more than a fashion icon. I can see Karlie more like a Kate Moss or Natalia Vodianova when she's 31 (maybe) but definitely not like Gisele especially to the American people. She's not really on the same track.

I agree with everything you said here. Though I'll admit I've compared Karlie with Gisele before, too. Not because I think she could ever get as rich, famous and popular as Gisele. But because I think the way she markets herself is similar to how Gisele conquered the media. Karlie, unlike any other model of her generation, is crossing over and is successful in many areas - HF modeling, commercial modeling, lingerie modeling, presenting a TV show, lots of partying and hanging out with celebrities, making sure there's gossip around her, being a muse to various designers and photographers, being Anna Wintour's favorite, making cameos in TV shows (Gossip Girl), etc. She's more pop-culture than any other models that have emerged in recent years. That is what makes her comparable to Gisele. It's all still very small-scale in relation to how huge Gisele is, but it's the same approach of covering as many fields as possible while still staying a high fashion darling (unlike Heidi, Tyra, etc who have become solely commercial models and media personalities). Similarly Kate Upton is going the opposite direction, trying to become a high fashion model after having achieved most of the other things, but we'll see how well that will work, I don't see her lasting in HF.

Gisele's career is insanely fascinating. No one will ever come close to reaching her fame and status. But it's refreshing to see younger models having those ambitions, being passionate about modeling and not just using it as a steppingstone to eventually move on to something else that has very little to do with fashion and modeling.

imo something that sets Gisele and Karlie apart and makes them incomparable is that Gisele has more range, she can go from HF to very commercial in a beat while Karlie isn´t that commerciable because of her face and body type... eg there´s only so much you can do with photoshop to make her lips and breasts look fuller/bigger.
Part of Gisele´s success was that she brought back to fashion the bombshell type, she was so publicize because of that. Today the type is so set that no girl can get as much as free promo as she did, not even Kate Upton.

I'd say thats more of a matter of opinion. ;)

^noticed the "imo" at the beginning of my post? it stands for "in my opinion" ;)

and I even think it's pretty obvious from the backlash HF models have had after walking VS fashion show like Anja and Karlie K. saying they don't have the same appeal :innocent:

Natalia always gets the glory for starting the Russian model craze. Gisele was just as influential for the Brazilian model craze, years before. (which I feel like she never gets credit for). Of course the model who starts such a movement is going to be "the one" no matter who's prettier, sexier etc to some people. Just about every iconic model has usually started some kind of movement or trend.

I think Karlie and Kate are probably the biggest contenders. but still Gisele at age 20 >

If you walk into the most popular sports bar in a metropolitan area, the guys will swoon over Sports Illustrated types, Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima and Gisele Bundchen. I can guarantee Karlie will get less than 20% of the crowd's love and I can guarantee no one is going to prefer her over the aforementioned models. They might say she's cute. Her range just doesn't go as far as the men's model market. Women and male fashionistas "get" her more than the average guy.

The difference here is that Gisele has the men's model market down as well as all the way up to the avant-garde/fashionista/couture/artistic model market (which does not like Miranda Kerr and other bombshell like or SI models), the women's lifestyle market and the teenage girl market.

I think the only model in history, but she isn't considered a model anymore, who has a bigger and wealthier empire than Gisele is Kathy Ireland at 2 Billion. She's a Sports Illustrated girl. The girls who became household names in middle America were bombshells. As Heidi Klum once said, there's a reason why people remember bombshell type models many decades later...fashionistas might try to argue that the bombshell type of model is "irrelevant" in the industry now but the "relevant" girls of fashion are "irrelevant" to people who don't follow fashion!

I´d say (again, my opinion) that the contender against Gisele is Candice Swanepoel, judging by opinions on this thread. She appeals to the male market (GQ, VS) and still gets HF gigs (magazines, ad campaigns & runway).
I don´t know if she can ever get Gisele´s status (or any other of the true supermodels) but is there a model nowadays who can? imo the supermodel era as we knew it is over... am I the only one who gets nostalgic remembering those days? :)

I love Candice but I don't think she is a strong contender to bring the "supermodel era", meaning creating a multi-million empire and setting new trends in beauty and sex appeal.

I think if we want to see a model who can reach that groundbreaking, society appealing status, then it's something that cannot be forced and someone who doesn't need people to convince/try hard the general public. It has to be a girl who is totally unique and doesn't follow the rules of the status quo. All the girls are trying to "be the next Gisele" and following it by the book all the way down to the client list and the hairstyle. Someone who can become the next Cindy, Gisele or Kathy Ireland needs to bring something new to the table but still classically bombshell.

these are not new, but never posted.

A powerful amazing Girl Friend weekend at @I Can Do It Conference in DC. My dear friend Gisele Bundchen & her two best friends: Jody & Charlene joined us to celebrate Mommy High Vibration Weekend & they all received a copy of The Day I Became A Superhero :) Gisele loves short story books for children that have powerful messages about gifts within. "Honi, I LOVE your book and how short it is that tells children how wonderful they are already. " Gisele Bundchen

I'm probably gonna get yelled at for this, but I honestly thought Rosie Huntington had the potential to be the next Gisele RIGHT AFTER her Transformers role. Rosie was very HF oriented prior to the film debuting, and was getting major respect from many, many major players in the fashion industry. Transformers than almost made her a household name. Heck even random people in my high school knew who she was! You cannot argue that she got HUGE exposure from that movie (even if she wasn't the best actress).

But here's the BIG but. She stopped doing VS. Honestly, had she continued doing VS, they would have pushed her SO much. She would have been fronting all their campaigns, and probably would get the most media coverage as the huge actress/VS supermodel. Had she kept up her HF cred, she still would be getting all these major clients that had embraced her prior to VS. She could definitely had juggled those two worlds just as flawlessly as Gisele had.

But unfortunately, all her potential was waisted. She's now a mediocre actress that has a rich BF that does modeling work here and there. Ugh.

Anyone else have similar thoughts?

^^ I wouldn't say exactly like Gisele but yes, she had the potential to create a legendary/iconic household name like Tyra, Gisele etc. People definitely know her name more than other VS girls..including Candice (in fact, I found interviews where the interviewee thinks Candice is Rosie..) and people like her. That transformers role did an incredible job putting Rosie in the limelight since she's basically the girl who bumped over Megan Fox.

Another model who everyone was hoping would become the next Gisele was Karolina Kurkova. Karolina was a designer favorite, editor and photographer favorite and VS Angel. But she didn't come close...

I think Rosie was called the next Kate and Gisele in her early career. Bar was called the next Gisele...I think Gisele just has a great work ethic. I always read her saying in her early days how she wanted respect from clients. She didn't want to just be known as a lingerie model. Too many models get a huge publicity/money job and completely abandon fashion. They lose their prestige. I also think what helped Gisele is she treated modeling as a business/job, not a lifestyle.
