Grace is an American young girl from Philadelphia, puritan raised. Grace was an exceptional child, later as a film star full of contradictions. Although she was very reserved Grace managed to get over the obstacles that made her a shy person and she grew out to one of the best actresses Hollywood has ever known , in 1955 Grace won the Oscar for best actress.

Graces father Jack was a passionate rower, he won gold at the Olympics in 1920 and her mother Margaret was an excellent swimmer. Margaret was the daughter of German Aristocrats, the American beauty ideal and on top of that the first female teacher who practiced gymnasium at the university of Pennsylvania.
The Kelly family lives in Philadelphia and they were known to be a beautiful healthy and sportive close family.

As a child Grace played with an amateur theatre and soon she found out that she wanted to be an actress. It was amazing how such a young and lively young teenager was able to perform in such a subtle and refined way.
After ending high school she was determined to be accepted at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which she entered in 1947. She moved to New York where she moved in at the Barbizon Hotel, a very chic institute for girls with an undiscussed behaviour.

Grace played about 18hours a day, the comments of one of her teachers in the first year is discouraging; “Grace is a nice girl but much to shy to ever achieve anything in life. She has success being a model but she isn’t a top model and will never be one. She misses glamour and sex appeal. She has nice shoulders but she doesn’t have a bosom.”

Grace never gave up, she convinces her clients and soon her portrait appears on the walls of Manhattan. From this point on Grace grew as an actress; Her first important meeting was with producer Stanley Kramer, who gave her the part next to Gary Cooper in High Noon. After that a part in Mogambo next to Clarke Gabel.
Master of Suspense Mr Hitchcock was convinced after seeing both movies, Grace was the perfect actress for his movies; Dial M for Murder and To Catch a Thief (filmed at the Cote D’Azur, grace was of course not aware that one day this beautiful place will be hers)

More movies came along; The bridges at Toko-Ri, Green Fire, The Country Girl and High Society were she played next to Bing Corsby, A Star is Born, …

Grace had a stormy love life, one with many contradictions, her first love was Don Richardson a high school boyfriend. That was actually the only one who had the same age. Gene Lyons was the second in line and already 10 years older, Ray Miland was 21 years older then Grace, more in row until she met Prins Rainier in 1955, Grace finally found what she was looking for, the time to start her own family.

Prince Rainier was a relaxed humoristic and self confident young man, who was very mature for his young age, 30 years old in 1955. Grace enjoyed his humour and Prince Rainier loved her smile.
Grace and Prince Rainier got married in 1956 and expected their first born in 1957, Caroline was born on January 23, 1957. Prince Albert 14 months later.

It wasn’t simple in the beginning, Princess Grace needed to convince the people of Monaco that she was worth being a first lady, and eventually everybody, ever Monegask and every Royal family just loved Princess Grace, there wasn’t any other young woman that was so dedicated, sophisticated and warm towards her country, community, her husband Prince Rainier and her family as Princess Grace grew out to be.

Princess Grace was known to be a leading woman within her family, but she knew where her place was within the Royal Family, Prince Rainier was a leading man she was his counsellor. Monaco experienced a difficult time when it almost vanished from the card, a crucial moment from 1956 until 1965. This period damaged a bit the fairy tale from Princess Grace. Grace became the prisoner of her own country, she couldn’t go out anymore without an escort and Prince Rainier estranged himself from Grace and their marriage.

The relation between Grace and her daughter Caroline wasn’t that good, Caroline was sent away to boarding school for 2 years, when she came back she wasn’t the reserved, polite little Princess anymore but a rebel. The relationship with her mother eventually never turned out as it needed to be. A couple of years later Princess Stephanie, the youngest of the 3 Grimaldis turned out to be just as her sister, a rebel with no responsibility.

Princess Grace dies in a terrible car accident, accompanied by her daughter Stephanie. Speculations around the accident didn’t make it any easier for Stephanie, journalist blamed Stephanie as being responsible for driving without a license, but an expert confirmed that this couldn’t have happened.

Grace died on 14 September 1982.

History as it happened
America’s very own Princess, Grace Patricia Kelly was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she grew up in the East Falls section, the third of four children to John Brendan Kelly, Sr., also known as Jack Kelly, and Margaret Katherine Majer Kelly.

Grace, having appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine a total of four times from 1954 - 1961, she first appeared on April 26, 1954 being listed as Hollywood’s Brightest and Busiest new star. LIFE continued to cover her from starlet to Princess as she moved from actress to the wife of Prince Rainer of Monaco.

Grace Kelly’s choice of career was reflected in her childhood experiences. While attending the prestigious Ravenhill Academy, Grace modeled fashions at local social events with her mother and sisters. She gained her first acting experience at the age of 12, when she played a lead role in Don’t Feed the Animals, a play produced by the Old Academy Players in East Falls. During high school, she acted and danced, graduating from Stevens School, a small private school in a mansion on Walnut Lane in Germantown, Philadelphia, in May 1947.

Grace decided to pursue her dreams of a career in the theater, using a scene from her uncle’s play, Torchbearers, for an audition into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Although the school had already selected its quota for the semester, Grace wangled an interview with Emile Diestel, the school’s admission officer. Notable talents including Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall, Gene Tierney, and Spencer Tracy had all studied there. Living in Manhattan’s Barbizon Hotel for Women, a prestigious establishment which barred men from entering after 10 p.m., and working as a model to support her studies, Grace began her first term the following October. A diligent student, she would use a recorder to practice and perfect her speech. Her early acting pursuits led her to the stage, most notably a Broadway debut in Strindberg’s The Father alongside Raymond Massey. At 19, her graduation performance was in The Philadelphia Story, a role with which she would also end her film career.

“Movies with soon be full of Grace Kelly” the head lines for the first of many articles written by LIFE magazine referring to what will become a roller coaster ride though this special persons life. An excerpt from this article shows the writers belief in what will become a fairy tale story for many years to come. “In Hollywood, 1954 is likely to be known as this year of Grace. The reason is the serious looking girl, portrayed by 24 year-old Grace Kelly, who has suddenly become the most valuable acting property in the movies. With four recently completed top-budget films to be released this year and a fifth already begun, Miss Kelly’s cool beauty and her unquestionably fine acting ability will soon be movieland bywords. What will not be so publicly evident, however, is the determination, what one convinced producer called Miss Kelly’s “stainless steel inside” that has brought all this about.

LIFE magazine continued to follow Grace through her many movies and television shows including her Oscar and countless other awards on April 9, 1956 the cover was of a beautiful and yet elegant Grace in a wedding dress while filming for the movie “The Swan” which becomes a parallel to her real life, in only 10 days she will marry Prince Rainer of Monaco, a wedding covered extensively in the April 30, 1956 issue of LIFE.

Nine months and four days after the wedding, Princess Grace gave birth to the royal couple’s first child, Princess Caroline. 21 guns announced the event, a national holiday was called, gambling ceased, and free champagne flowed throughout the principality. A little over a year later, 101 guns announced the birth of their second child, Prince Albert. Prince Rainier and Princess Grace had three children:

Hereditary Princess Caroline Louise Marguerite, born January 23, 1957, and now heiress presumptive to the throne of Monaco
Albert II, Prince of Monaco, born March 14, 1958, current ruler of the Principality of Monaco
Princess Stephanie Marie Elisabeth, born February 1, 1965.
On September 13, 1982, while driving with her daughter Stephanie to Monaco from their country home, Princess Grace, then 52, suffered a stroke, causing her Rover P6 to plunge 100 feet down a mountainside. Princess Grace died the next day without regaining consciousness. Princess Grace was buried in the Grimaldi family vault on September 18, 1982, after a requiem mass in Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Monaco. Prince Rainier, who never remarried after Kelly’s death, was buried alongside her following his death in 2005.

classic stars
Grace Kelly -- who would have been 75 in November 2004, had it not been for the tragic automobile accident that took her life in Monaco in 1982 -- made less than a dozen feature films in a half-dozen years before becoming Princess Grace in 1956.

Nevertheless, she was voted 13th on the American Film Institute's list of the greatest actresses of the classic era, and two of those 11 films -- High Noon and Rear Window -- are considered by AFI voters to be among the 50 best films ever made. She won a Best Actress Oscar for a third film, The Country Girl, and was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Mogambo. A fair number of film fans believe that she was the most beautiful actress ever to appear on film.

Not bad for such a relatively short career! One can only begin to speculate about what she might have accomplished in Hollywood if she hadn't decided to marry Prince Rainier and become a member of the ruling family of Monaco.

Grace Patricia Kelly was born on November 12, 1929, in Philadelphia. Her dream was to become an actress, so much so that she left for New York right after high school graduation in 1947. She found some modeling work, appeared on magazine covers, studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Art, and acted on Broadway and on TV. Two years later, after moving to California, she landed a small part in Fourteen Hours. Her second film was High Noon, and it was all up from there for the beautiful 23-year-old actress.

Among other things, Kelly was the ideal "Hitchcock blonde," and appeared in three films by The Master: Dial M for Murder (1954), Rear Window (1954), and To Catch a Thief (1955). During the filming of Thief with Cary Grant on the Riviera, she met the Prince, and the rest is history. Her last movie was High Society, a musical remake of The Philadelphia Story, with a plot that was full of Though she was regularly offered film roles, she never acted again. She remained active in other ways, as a narrator and a member of the Board of Directors of 20th Century Fox, but chose to concentrate on her duties as the wife of the Prince of Monaco. She had three children -- Caroline, Albert, and Stephanie.

The seeming fairy-tale life came to an end on September 14, 1982, in an automobile accident in the mountains of Monaco. Her family was devastated, and her fans will have to settle for those 11 films.
