Rare, one-of-a-kind, eye-catching fine jewelry will take center stage at balls and galas this season according to Houston’s leading fine jeweler.
“Unique, distinctive pieces of fine jewelry add timeless style and elegance to any special occasion. The new style trend is for women and men to wear bold pieces, turning any event into a red carpet occasion,” says Jesse Chao from Gems by Chao.
America’s jeweler for the connoisseur specializes in advising clients - matching fine jewelry to their personal style while taking into account skin tone, eye color, personality and the client’s lifestyle.
Socialites and philanthropists like to put the fun into fundraising with stylish, entertaining galas. Here are some of the latest custom fine jewelry pieces for both men and women that will debut at charity events and special occasions:
More men wearing diamonds
The trend for male celebrities to sport diamonds takes a new twist in 2008 as men incorporate large colored stones into bold, masculine pieces.
“Bracelets, cuff links and men’s rings all look great with tuxedos. A fine example of this trend is our latest handmade 18kt white gold masculine ring with a large natural cognac diamond, set with 42 fine white diamonds,” says Chao.
“Grace Kelly” look
Women are already planning to attend galas wearing less fine jewelry items but adorning larger, more impressive pieces.
The impact of one simple, eye catching piece is even greater when combined with an elegant evening gown.
“We have a selection of vintage style designs including an opulent diamond cuff bracelet with 980 diamonds set in 18kt white gold. Another large glamorous piece is an intertwined diamond necklace with 396 diamonds set in 18kt white gold. This fusion of the contemporary with the traditional is the combination of Hollywood glamour and royalty – so we call it the Grace Kelly look,” says Chao.
Colored cocktail rings
Discerning women are now looking for exquisite rings in deep colors. The key to finding a good cocktail ring is the color intensity and quality of the stone plus the design and craft of the setting.
Gems by Chao has an extensive collection of one of a kind sapphire, emerald and ruby cocktail rings that will leave a lasting impression at any social event.
“Our family selects the finest quality gem stone for each rare piece. These designs include a cobalt blue cabochon cut sapphire ring of 15.06 cts and a rare fine quality Burmese ruby cushion cut ring of 3.04 cts,” says Chao.
Cocktail rings are very desirable this season and the more unique the fine gem stone is, the better.
Jewelry that enhances natural beauty
Today women are looking for rare fine jewelry pieces which enhance their own natural beauty, enhancing the color of their eyes or accentuating their neckline.
A winning combination this season is a strapless ball gown with a beautiful large pendant and necklace set.
“The stunning look of a high quality gemstone pendant set in diamonds and worn with a matching necklace makes a strong style statement. One of our latest pendant designs is an intense blue aquamarine pendant of 20.60 cts set with 125 diamonds. A piece like this is fit for a princess,” says Chao.

Photographs, clothes, jewels, films and other items belonging to the Hollywood star-turned-princess of Monaco are on exhibit in a show entitled 'The Grace Kelly Years'.

Set up at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, the show pays tribute to Princess Grace on the 25th anniversary of her death in a car accident near Monte Carlo.

The exhibition opened to the public on 12 July and will run till 23 September. It will then travel around the world for five years, stopping in Tokyo, London, Paris and in the summer of 2009, it will be in Rome.

The aim of the exhibition to keep alive the memory and personality of Princess Grace (1929-1982), who gave international visibility to the tiny principality of Monaco, which lies between France and Italy.

The exhibit includes personal contributions from Kelly's children, Prince Albert II and his sisters Caroline and Stephanie.

Albert said that the exhibit aims to be “loyal proof of the personality and aura of Princess Grace” underlining how “behind her legendary image she had extraordinary sensibility, she was a loving mother and she had a sense of beauty that made her constantly search for perfection."

All aspects of the Kelly's life - her childhood in Philadelphia her screen star years and her role as princess, are set up in 15 rooms, each having a different theme.

The exhibition begins with Grace Kelly’s childhood in the “Philadelphia Room”, where family items and documents are on show.

The exhibition continues with her debut in the acting world and life as a leading Hollywood actress (New York Room and Hollywood Room).

This section includes all of the 11 films Grace Kelly starred in, with particular attention placed on the ones directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

The “Meeting Room” marks the transition point in Kelly's life when she moved from the US to Europe. It includes the dress she was wearing when she met her future husband, Prince Rainer.

In the “Wedding Room”, visitors can see her wedding dress and the film of her wedding ceremony, when Grace Patricia Kelly became a Princess.

The next part of the exhibition reflects her royal role. The “Ball Room” has a collection of the numerous gowns she wore for the official parties hosted by the principality.

The exhibition also includes the “Great Love Room”, that marks the passage between her public life and her private one, where her close relationship with her husband, Prince Ranieri is emphasised and which acts as a prelude to the “Family Room”, dedicated entirely to her three children.

The exhibition ends at the “Private Garden Room” with a collection of paintings and the “Friends Room” with declarations from her dearest friends.

Kelly’s favourite dresses will also be on show in this room, including accessories such as the purse by Hermés which she made famous worldwide, as well as letters from famous fans.

Items from the rare Grace Kelly exhibition include evening gowns, photographs, letters, video and other items spanning her life, most of which have never been seen outside of the tiny principality of Monaco, an enclave in southern France.

“The pieces selected for this exhibition highlight her great beauty and style for which she is so well-known,” said James Niven, vice chairman of Sotheby’s and son of actor David Niven, a close friend of the late princess.

The exhibition is being organized by Monacan authorities and Sotheby’s in collaboration with the Monaco royal family and will open in mid October.

Among the items featuring in the exhibition are the blue satin column dress and cloak she wore to the 1955 Academy Awards ceremony when she accepted the best actress Oscar for her role in ‘The Country Girl’.

The Oscar statuette will also be on view, as will the taffeta dress with floral motif she wore when she first met her future husband, Prince Rainier III, when attending the 1955 Cannes Film Festival.

The stunning 10.47 carat engagement ring the prince gave her, and which she wore in the 1956 film ‘High Society’, will also be on display alongside the iconic brown leather Hermes bag named after her.

Two dresses in the exhibition — one by Givenchy worn during a visit to the White House with president John Kennedy in 1961, the other a Helen Rose ball gown worn in ‘High Society’ — are later to be auctioned off for charity. afp
