Graphic Design

silvi: graphic design doesn't need to be solely on the computer as a career, but the educational part will certainly give you an overwhelming amount of familiarity................

there is definitely a place for hand illustration, photography, video work, letterpress, etc, etc in graphic design

at my school, the emphasis is more on developing conceptual + communication skills ... and less about the software. that's great for your brain, but it also means that you have to put the time in to teach yourself the programs (via internet tutorials, whatever). it's a 4 year, bachelor of graphic design (professional degree), with an emphasis on large blocks of studio time...

other schools are more trade-based and tend to focus more on the software .. a lot of those programs are 2 years, so you'll be done alot faster! i think most of those schools now would be more focused on new media design.

we have a careers and education forum with threads on several schools, maybe you'll find some information there:flower:

manzaline, i love the images you posted. why don't you make threads on single graphic designers, we have a whole forum devoted to the subject here...;)

Hi guys,
I just want to let you all know, that I have made my choice.
I'm doing commercial communication. (that comprise communication, and advertisement).
I like to start learning Graphic design on my computer.
What is the best software to begin with?:flower:

I'm taking Graphic Design as the Technology for my IB Middle Years Programme... I'm really looking forward to be doing this sort of thing in the near future. :flower:

Since the typography-thread is picking up, I thought I'd ressurect this thread. I'm a graphic design-student myself and love the places where fashion and graphic design merge ^^

A bit of a late answer maybe, but the generally the unbelievably overpriced Adobe softwares are good, photoshop, indesign, illustrator.

I also quite like Corel painter, but this is strictly for illustrating though.

Silvi -
The Adobe Creative Suite is pretty much the industry standard these days, although you may want to learn Quark as some places still use it.

Good luck! It's a wonderful industry and everyday I'm inspired and surprised by what is going on out there.

I checked out the new version of Quark, and I love the interface but as things are now, the CS apps are so streamlined to work with each other it's really more pain than gain. And now with CS4 out it's really the way to go for professional software.

Resurrecting this thread from the dead. ^_^

Has anyone seen any of Delphine Diallo's work before? She's a photographer, graphic designer, art director, animator, and painter. These are from her series called Magic Photo Studio, and include photographs (from Senegal) and designs she created in exploration of her cultural identity. I really like the layering, and mix of mediums, in her work.

Sorry about the range of sizes with these...Delphine unfortunately doesn't have a website, so I collected these from various places, and while some were small, these next ones are big enough that I chose to attach them as thumbnails to avoid slow page loading for anyone with an older computer...
