Gucci 'The Art of Silk' 2025 : Julia Garner by Steven Meisel

I don't know why Italian brands are so obessed with her. She used to be very close to Prada and now for the FW25 show, she was sitting close (or next to? I don't remember) to Mr Pinault. Does she has a connection to the fashion crowd like Sofia Coppola?

I don't mean this in any way as a diss to Julia or her talent, because I think this is maybe a rare case where someone has earned their success through the quality of their work and not just the hype machine or looking cute, but I think fashion people tend to be a bit out of touch and it makes them vulnerable to an actor's management overselling their client's fame or potential impact as a spokesperson. On paper, Julia is acclaimed, has a good body of work with successful projects (mostly in TV but she's done great work in under-seen films), and seems like exactly the kind of starlet you'd want representing your brand. And in a way she is, but she always seems like she's on the cusp of bigger stardom. So Gucci maybe made an investment a few years back when she was going to be playing Madonna in the big biopic and she was the co-lead in a buzzed-about new Universal monsters movie, etc. and none of that really came to fruition. "Ozark" is over. She was with Prada during the "Inventing Anna" era. She has a couple of things still to come out this year that could do the trick, but we'll have to see. So I think it was a case of Gucci wanting to be savvy and sign a deal before she really blew up and it wasn't a bad idea but it just hasn't quite worked out. I mean, this is her third or fourth campaign for them, I think? I'm sure they'll pick a new roster of celebrity spokespeople soon.
