strawberry daiquiri...that last picture you posted of her, in the black bikini...that is the most airbrushed picture i've ever seen!
From the moment she blasted onto the music scene back in 1996 Gwen Stefani has been such a huge style icon that the public came up with the term “Gwenabee”. The peroxide blonde ska/pop princess was solely responsible for 1997's Adidas track pants explosion. Since then she has helped re-spark trends such as the 80's, cartoon/anime, ghetto fabulous, hair extensions, hoop earrings, Doc Martins, rock tees, 70's punk, goth/glam, Indian chic and even Marilyn Monroe in 2000. Today, in her early 30s, she still leads the life that every modern working girl dreams about. Her closet still is the home for all things colorful, Be-Dazzled, embroidered, studded, patterned, striped, plaid, patterned, rhinestone, and... well... anything that's not subtle.
Gwen has been a Southern California babe all her life, which reflects in her “Vans slip-ons” personality. Although her style is more laid back this year (well, she no longer has candy pink hair, at least) it is certainly still outrageous, but in a good way. For the most part Gwen makes her tour clothes with the help of a stylist friend. She proudly boasts to reporters that she walks into fabric stores, buys endless yards, goes home and just creates everything from Genie pants to dresses. Gwen also is fan of thrift stores. She will regularly cut up sweaters and refit vintage men’s pants. Keeping in mind she makes about 60% of her wardrobe, who does she rely on for the remaining 40%? She chooses many hometown designers, staying very true to her roots. Nearly every piece of jewelry that Gwen owns is made for her by friend Brooke Dulien, who designs our personal favorite line, White Trash Charms. One of the few exceptions is her Neil Lane engagement ring given to her by Bush front man Gavin Rossdale. Brooke is also responsible for styling her photo shoots for magazines. Naming just a few of the pendants she owns: the lightning bolt, the mud flap girl, Prince on the 45, the bow tie, the guitar, the rainbow, the VIP pendant (May’s Editor’s Pick), and the cherry pendant. Brooke made “Rock Steady” knuckle cuffs to promote their last album. If nothing less, White Trash Charms is truly an obsession for Gwen. She stops by LA’s Red Monkey Designs for leather cuffs and watch bracelets. Other accessories come courtesy of Jennifer Kaufman (earrings and pendants), Mint Vox (wristbands), and Tarina Tarantino (hair accents).
As far as clothing, most designers hail from LA or London, two places where she spends most of her time. There are a few exceptions like Hysteric Glamour pieces from Japan. She’s a self professed Hysteric junkie. Every time she visits Japan she always makes sure to pick up as much as she can find. In 2000 she wore to death their denim jacket that was heavily decorated with graffiti writing and rhinestones. Although she tries not to wear too many mega designer labels, she falls for Dolce & Gabbana’s D&G line, especially their tops and shoes. She’s been also known to wear Prada and Jean Paul Gaultier on rare occasions. She felt like Cinderella when British couture master John Galliano created her red Marilyn Monroe-inspired dress for the 2001 Grammy Awards. UK’s Fake London is one of her absolute favorites. The line’s designer, Desiree Mejer, makes sure Gwen gets first dibs at her fabulous cashmere sweaters, patch/punk jeans, and embroidered tees. One of Gwen’s favorite pieces is Fake London’s blue and white striped patch jacket with shredded seams.
All any Gwenabee has to know in achieving her current style are the names of three boutiques in Los Angeles: Curve, Tracey Ross, and Naked. She will find most of her selection of LA designers here. Pants are a major part of her wardrobe, she’s not your typical skirt wearing girl. Gwen is a sucker for trousers from Shawn Clothing, a line designed by friend Yohanna Logan. Grey Ant takes care of her need for low slung dress pants while Juicy and vintage Levi’s cover her denim fix. Other designers she stocks up on include Linda Stokes for LSO Designs (pants and jackets), Karen Zambos (tops), Korn Bread (tops), Vivienne Westwood (sweaters, dresses, shoes), Valentino (beaded bikinis), Christy Lucken (bikinis and scarves), Louis Verdad (stretch pants), Juicy (tops and jeans), Old Navy (jackets and jeans), Tommy Hilfiger (jackets, tops, and scarves), Heatherette (tops and jeans), Charlotte Ronson (tops), Kitty Boots (jackets and skirts), Calvin Klein (tanks and jeans), and Preen (jeans).
Gwen is a huge hat person. She owns several by Eugenia Kim (black & white floral), Selima (blue & white checkered), and Jennifer Scott (lipstick red leather cap). Gwen only recently started wearing heels, before that it was mostly Doc Martins and platforms. These days she slips into stilettos from Casadei, Stephane Kelian, D&G, Donald J Pliner, Versace, Hollywould, and even Frederick's of Hollywood.
One thing is for certain: no matter what trend is in, no matter what mood she's in, no matter what she's wearing Gwen will forever be in makeup. It's her biggest weakness. Up until recently she did everything herself. Now she relies on friend Mathu Anderson for face paint and hair genius Danilo for her mane. For makeup Gwen loves MAC. She'll horde up the mascara, colored eye shadows, lip pencils, and their Oh Baby! lip gloss. Gwen loves Anna Sui's shimmery foundation and colorful lipsticks. When Gwen went pink she used a dye from Australia's Fudge Box line. As a blonde she uses Goldwell's platinum rinses and highlights. She'll use hair extensions or Quickfalls from Raquel Welch's hairline. To top it all off she's use products from Bumble & Bumble and John Frieda for extra glitz.
