Gwyneth Paltrow drinks while pregnant

Well a glass of beer is about the same as a shot of hard liquor, so it's like her drinking a shot of "iron rich" tequila.

Gwyn's wining gives more pregnant pause

Gwynnie, darling, what are you doing?

After yesterday's item that pregnant Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted downing Guinness with dinner on Tuesday, a reader tells me: "I sat next to her and Chris Martin at Lupa on Thompson Street [Wednesday] night; she had two or three glasses of wine in the time that I was there, and I left when they were partway through the main course."

While Guinness contains iron that can be good for a pregnancy, drinking wine when you're five months along is a tad more controversial.

Gwyneth and Chris were looking very much in love at a corner table in the back room of the popular SoHo restaurant, run by Mario Batali.

Continues the spy: "She looked gorgeous as usual, with the pregnant 'glow.' Her face did look large though, which, according to my superstitious Italian friend who was with me, means she is having a girl, since face changes during pregnancy mean a female child."

Isn't it amazing what you can learn from a gossip column?

I am far from a Gwyneth fan or apologist. In fact I can't stand her. But this is a tempest in a teapot (or pint glass.)

Guess what folks. For many generations women drank - and even smoked - while pregnant. While I won't claim the world is in great shape, are we prepared to blame all the world's problems on some pretty typical human behavior? Are all the miscreants in the world purely the offspring of all mothers who drank?

I don't condone heavy drinking or drug use by anyone, pregnant, female or other. But I really doubt that Gwyneth is seriously endangering her unborn child. Riding in automobiles constitutes a greater danger IMO.

My credentials: my father was a pediatrician for about 50 years and saw many children from all socioeconomic strata, including ones whose mothers drank and smoked regularly during pregnancy. Moderation is key.

I agree completely. One or two beers won't hurt an unborn baby. FAS does exist, but many health issues are overblown to prey on the minds of people.

Same thing with the breastmilk fanatics. When I was pregnant I made the mistake of hesitating when asked if I would breastfeed. I swear the look the nurse gave me....she was going to clobber me over my head.

I wonder what they will cross off the list for pregnant women 10,20 years from now. At some point I guess all they will be able to drink is milk.

Will you drink alcoholic beverages while you are pregnant?

When you drink an alcoholic beverage, the alcohol is quickly absorbed into your bloodstream. The alcohol circulates in the blood until it is completely broken down by the liver. It may take more than an hour for the liver to break down the alcohol in one mixed drink, glass of wine or can of beer. If you are pregnant, the alcohol in your bloodstream passes through the placenta to the baby so that when you have a drink, the baby has one equal in strength. Because of the baby's size and its developing system, this "drink" of alcohol can be more harmful to the baby than to you. What kind of harm can alcohol do to my unborn baby?

A woman who drinks alcohol during pregnancy risks giving birth to an abnormal child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). A child born with FAS has a pattern of mental and physical defects.
Growth deficiency is one of the most common physical defects of FAS. Most infants with FAS weigh less and are shorter than normal infants. The head size is smaller than normal too. These youngsters never catch up to normal growth and will always be smaller than other children of the same age.
FAS babies may have malformed faces. They have narrow eyes, low nasal bridges, short upturned noses and thin upper lips. Many of these babies also have heart and joint abnormalities.
Mental retardation is the most serious mental defect associated with FAS. In Seattle, Washington where much of the research on FAS has taken place, FAS has been reported to be the third most frequently recognized disorder involving retardation. It seems that intellectual development is related to physical malformation - the most severely malformed children also have the greatest intellectual handicap. Many FAS children are poorly coordinated and have short attention spans and behavioral problems.
None of these defects corrects itself as the child grows older. Is FAS something new?

It has been known for years that babies of chronic alcoholics are born weak and sickly. Even in Biblical and early Greek literature, a woman was warned not to drink wine or strong drinks after she conceived her child. Since 1973 the pattern of physical and mental defects, called FAS, has been associated with the offsprings of chronic alcoholic mothers. How common is FAS?

It is uncertain to what extent FAS is found in the United States. In Seattle, it is estimated that one child out of 900 live births has FAS. Research studies indicate that many babies are at risk because nine out of ten women drink regularly (one cocktail every night). It is estimated that there are more than one million alcoholic women of childbearing age. And the number is growing. . .particularly among teenagers.
Babies born to teenagers who drink heavily are at double the risk. Since the teenager herself is a growing individual, her body needs nutrients for her own growth. The unborn child also needs nutrients for development. In a teenage pregnancy, both mother and baby are at risk - the mother puts additional stress on her body and the baby has an increased chance of being born too small or too soon. If the fetus is also subjected to excessive alcohol from the mother, the child may suffer some characteristics of FAS. How much alcohol places the fetus at risk?

Research to establish the amount of alcohol that places the fetus at risk is still in progress. The full syndrome has been found in babies born to mothers who drink four to five drinks a day, or who go on binges of extreme alcohol consumption. But, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Some babies are born with defects when the mother consumes much less than four or five drinks a day.
Animal research indicates that there is a direct relationship between the amount of alcohol a mother drinks and the amount of damage the baby suffers. Babies have been born at lower birth weights and with some signs of physical defects when the mother consumed two or three drinks a day while pregnant. A baby may suffer behavioral and learning problems throughout life when the mother drinks only one or two drinks a day while pregnant.
Since women vary in their ability to break down alcohol, and because even one drink a day may harm an unborn child, the wise thing to do is to eliminate alcohol from the diet while pregnant. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a tragedy that can be prevented. What effect would alcohol have on the fetus if I ate while drinking?

Drinking on a full stomach slows down the rate at which alcohol enters the bloodstream. The presence of fat in the stomach slows absorption of alcohol. However, there is no safe way to estimate how slowly to drink or how much to eat to ensure the baby's safety. The safe thing to do is to avoid drinking alcohol while pregnant.
Will the fetus be affected with FAS if the father is an alcoholic? That may sound like a silly question - but it isn't. We know that the alcohol in the mother's bloodstream may affect the growing fetus. But we don't know yet if alcohol consumed by the father might affect the condition of the sperm and then affect cell division and growth after conception. What about the rest of my diet? What should I eat while I'm pregnant?

Eliminating alcohol from the diet when you are pregnant is a precaution you take for the health of your baby. But, also important for your health and for the health of your baby is good nutrition throughout pregnancy. You will have to increase your food intake because now you have a growing fetus inside of you. If you are a pregnant teenager, your needs are greater than for a pregnant adult because you yourself are still growing, plus you have to provide nutrients for a growing fetus. A guide to good eating is provided. Good luck. Have a healthy baby.

PS I knew someone who drank during her pregnancy who had a ******** child with a malformed face. This really is not something to fool around with.

Britney never drank while she was pregnant. If it was Britney instead of Gwyneth people would be freaking out, but people assume that Gwyneth knows what she's talking about because she's so pretentious and healthy.

Oh god, I love you.

That's only one beer THAT WE'VE SEEN.

If she does this in public, how many can she possibly be having in private?

What kind of person would EVER TAKE the chance with their baby? Who would risk their baby's health for a DRINK? Nobody NEEDS alcohol. Alcohol is not a necessity.

It is ridiculous what celebrities are allowed to get away with, because they are cute and have nice clothes.

I agree with you so much on this.

Just because she had one drink, does not mean she's some raving alcoholic downing pints on a regular basis.

That is so not the point that anyone is making.

This is just me, call me crazy! But if I was having a baby I'd take every single godd*mn precaution in the world to keep it healthy.

I love alcohol, but I'd love my own child much more. All you have to do is give up alcohol for 9 freaking months.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Does something interesting shocker

Sorry - not funny if baby ends up harmed, but I'm just shocked that Miss "I'd rather die than let my child eat cup-a-soup" Paltrow did something so out of her public character...

She must be human after all :P

I agree with you--simply part of taking the responsibility that comes with having another human being completely dependent on you.

As I say, I knew a child who was born with pretty much every single birth defect listed in the fact sheet above. I wish all of you could meet her, she's sweet. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome sounds innocuous enough, but we're talking about mental retardation, stunted growth, and deformed faces.

Being pregnant isn't a lark, it requires some thought and care and sacrifice, and I don't mean not being able to wear your favorite designer jeans for a few months.

The child's birth defects could have been due to a chromosomal, metabolic, or mitochondrial disorder. Do you know for sure that this child had a diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome? If not, don't be so quick to blame the mother. There are many causes of facial malformation and retardation, only one of which is alcohol.

I have many friends who drank before they knew they were pregnant (some drank a lot--it was a summer in Finland) and they still gave birth to beautiful, healthy children. Of course they stopped drinking after they found out they were with child.

It really is ok to have a little alcohol while pregnant. Some people can't have "just a little" so the general advice is to have none at all so the ones with problems don't take it as couragement to keep on drinking.

My mother is an ob gyn and she confirms this.

What it comes down it is that it's her body, her baby, her choice and her buisness...
I would go mad if the press reported every detail of my life.
I hope she just ignores it.

as someone who previously mentioned, the public's reaction is totally biased. If this had been Britney Spears, people would be torching her posters, and calling her white trash and a bad mother who doesn't deserve her child.
But noooo, miss priss Gwenyth drinks openly in public and 'it's not big deal, just a few beers!', so what if the child can develop FAS, it's Gwenyth! She won an oscar for an overrated performance and has a fake british accent, so she MUST KNOW WHAT SHE'S DOING.

I didn't ask for a copy of the medical records, but the mother believed it was fetal alcohol syndrome, and the child had the symptoms.

You're too funny

*note to self, must get fake British accent*

don't give opinions on things you don't know for sure.

we all know how much Gwyneth cares, as every mother, for her child and makind statments about her selfinshness or whatever are pure bs.
