Deep-set eyes and a serious cupid’s brow combine to make Hanne Gaby Odiele’s features startlingly memorable. Banging her head as a gangly 17-year-old at Novarock festival in 2005, the Belgian teen caught the eye of stylist Tom Van Dorpe who pinned her as a supermodel in the wings. Within months, Hanne was landing editorials in British Vogue and Vogue Italia and walking the New York Fashion Week runway for Rodarte, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Thakoon.
A car accident the following year put Hanne’s initial success on hold, leaving her with two broken legs and a lengthy crutch-aided rehabilitation. But the ever-positive model forged on; quickly bouncing back to build a stellar career that has seen her star in campaigns for Moschino and Diesel and walk for the likes of Prada, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Chanel and Saint Laurent. Hanne recently shot our winter campaign while down under for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, afterwards sharing an insight into her life and journey to now.
JASU: How would you describe yourself as a child, growing up?
HANNE GABY ODIELE: I had lots of energy, was pretty creative and very curious.
JASU: You’re always being spotted at music festivals. Last festival you went to and the best act there?
HGO: Coachella, I went right after Australia. It was amazing. Favo gig? I'd say Moby.
JASU: What are you listening to right now?
HGO: Daft Punk.
JASU: If you weren’t a model, where would life be leading you?
HGO: Cultures, travel, nature and history have always fascinated me. So I hope I would have managed to travel a lot still. I definitely got lucky with modeling!
JASU: What do you miss most about Belgium, aside from your loved ones?
HGO: Architecture … and the food of course.
JASU: The car accident in 2006 must have been such a horrendous experience, what did you take from it?
HGO: So many things. It gave me a greater appreciation of life: my job and most off all my friends and family. On hard days sometimes I think back and remember, "I’ll be alright, it could be much worse!”
JASU: How was the experience of walking for Ellery at Australian Fashion Week?
HGO: Kym is such a cool, amazing woman. And the clothes were styled so well. I hope to collaborate with her in the future again, I had a blast.
JASU: What are your thoughts on Australian fashion?
HGO: Australians and their fashion just feel so cool, without trying too hard. All my Aussie friends are also very unique people.
JASU: What’s the first thing you do when you get home to New York?
HGO: See if my turtle, plants and fish are alive then throw everything that’s spoiled out of the fridge.
JASU: What is coming up next for you?
HGO: Summertime!
