Harper’s Bazaar France April 2025 : Rianne van Rompaey by Carlijn Jacobs

It's hard for me to enjoy the 70s feel of the cover when I've been buying 1970s magazines lately, especially ones that have a lot of Helmut Newton's work (that Carlijin is attempting to reference with the green wall like Nova and Marie Claire). It just doesn't work for me. It's lacking the real aura of the time and it feels flat. There's too much flash, the shade of green isn't that great... Even the photos from Helmut's later years where he was phoning it in during fashion shoots have more energy than this cover:

I feel like Harper's Bazaar France is only a *good* magazine when you look at it's closest competitor: Vogue France. But it's not offering anything that's... great. It's a bit too self-satisfied/smug for it's own good. I'd like to see it TRY something, instead of producing tragic covers of the same ol' same ol' stand by French celebrities (Laetitia, Charlotte) and referring back to past glory days. I don't think it's enough for this magazine *not be* as bad as Vogue France, or be the remnants of Vogue Paris, it's just... Not good enough. I've been subscribed to this magazine since it's debut for some dumb reason and I think I have to let it expire.

I'm so tired of everything being a reference to something better.

Looking at the two photographs above, I do not find them better or more inspiring. They are just ok.

What were the sales figures last year? Were they better than Vogue France?
Vogue France total circulation for 2024 was 952,278, and Harper's Bazaar France was 602,270. However, I believe that the Harper's Bazaar circulation document may not be complete with the circulation dropping from 70,000-80,000 per issue pre-September to 20,000-40,000 from September onwards which just seems incorrect for such a huge drop.

After viewing the Vogue France issue in whole. I'm sure that this issue will be breathtaking.

This is a great take on what a cover should be in my opinion!!! The colors are fantastic. Vogue France / Italy please take note lol

But now Daria is back!
Not really since she is only doing campaigns or lookbooks…
But I wonder which project is going to reunite her and Emmanuelle.

Sabato dropped the ball for having her only in the jewelry campaign. A total waste of money.
