THE NEW YORK POST: COVER GIRL KILLED IN A SMASH UP July 30, 2006

COVER GIRL
KILLED IN SMASHUP

TEEN WAS RISING STAR OF RUNWAY

By PHILIP RECCHIA

July 30, 2006 -- A stunning 19-year-old cover girl - a ringer for Kate Moss but her polar opposite in attitude - died in a fiery auto accident on a New Jersey highway after a Manhattan photo shoot.

Heather Bratton, a dark-haired catwalker for fashion labels Chloe and Miu Miu whose seductive, sultry look had taken the European runways by storm, was killed on July 22 when her car-service limo broke down in the middle lane of the New Jersey Turnpike and was rear-ended by a Toyota SUV, her family said.

Both cars erupted into flames, and Bratton, in the back of the Ford Crown Victoria, never made it out.

Authorities did not immediately identify the teen, and news accounts of the crash were sketchy, but word of the stunner's death began to seep out through the fashion world later in the week.

"She flew up [July 20] for a photo shoot for W magazine," said her stepfather, Tim Kerrigan, in a telephone interview from the family's hometown of Wesley Chapel, Fla.

The family - mother, Kerrigan and four brothers and sisters - was packing Friday for a trip to South Carolina, where Heather was to be buried, Kerrigan said.

Bratton's driver, Selim Koskar, 30, of Brooklyn, suffered burns on his entire body and was in critical condition at St. Barnabas Hospital inLivingston, N.J. Two other people were injured in the crash.

Bratton, who was born in West Virginia and raised in the Tampa area, was signed last year by the international modeling agency Women Management.
"She told me when she was 12 that she wanted to be a model," Kerrigan said.

He added that she went to modeling school at age 15 and wanted to be an actress but enjoyed her runway work.

"She did really well, and sometimes she got really well paid," her stepdad said. "But, for her, it wasn't about the money; it was about doing what she dreamed of doing."

During her brief career, she graced the cover of Italian Vogue in a shoot by famed fashion fotog Steven Meisel. And this summer, she strutted down catwalks in Milan and Paris, modeling for Prada, Gucci, Burberry and Chanel.
"With haunting dark eyes, strong cheekbones and a face that lends itself to many different looks, Heather is reminiscent of a young Kate Moss," one fashion critic gushed.

But Heather off the catwalk wasn't anything like Moss. "She was very grounded, very strong in her faith, a strong Christian," Kerrigan said. "To her, it was a job. She enjoyed it, but she hated anybody making a big deal about it."

Heather will be featured in W

I'm so glad that she was able to life her dream. I only wish that she could have stayed with us longer. She was a fantastic model, she really was. I'm sure in time we would have all been calling her a Supermodel. I breaks my heart that she's gone.

thank you for the article.

i hope they will run her photos in w magazine. it would be a nice tribute.

It's all so stunning. Life is so fragile, and Heather was so beautiful and to have it all taken away so suddenly and in such a cataclysmic way is just really unsettling. It almost makes you want to fall on your knees at the sheer weirdness and uncertainty of it all. But I feel sure that Heather would want us all to find strength in her life, and her death, and pick ourselves up and do even greater and more radical things with our own lives. If life is all that fragile, why not just go for it and do something great--- like Heather did. I mean, what if she's watching us. ^_^

I didn't know that she was a Christian! I love her even more.

That's probably the best article that I've seen so far about what happened.

^I agree that it's the best article so far -- it really personified her and connected her life with her fans/the readers of the article. I'm happy to see that they captured her through the words of someone who knew her well, instead of just a perspective from the fashion industry (Though that is not a bad thing).

God must've needed one more angel to watch over earth

For some reason, this section of the article wasn't included:

"She was supposed to fly home [the next night], but the area got into some stormy weather, so she got a 7:30 a.m. flight on Saturday [from Newark Airport]. She took a cab from her hotel in New York."

It does sadden me that all this could've been avoided...

The article is really nice and that picture of her is so sweet....even though I've seen it all over avatars, it's really beautiful.

she was an edgy model... that's what a model should be... i must confess I wasn't crazy about her walk... but i definitely saw the appeal in her strong facial features.

it's horrible what happened to such a young person, but for what it's worth, she will always be remembered young, beautiful and a successful individual who achieved her dream, no matter how long it lasted!

rest in peace Heather!!!!

For those who weren't able to buy The Sunday's New York Post, Heather's story was full page. Featuring her Vogue Italia Cover and her Burberry Prorsum runway in color. No matter how many times you read her official death from her agencies website, turning the page to her story was very emotional still. To those that were fortunate enough to work with her, know her and had brief encounter with her it was emotional to read. For her family and friends, I could just imagine the deep pain and grief turning the page to it.

I can never say enough how this young lady catapulted to the top of her profession in such a short time. She was blessed indeed. It's just not fair that we will never see how she progress well into her 20's. Because in my opinion she would've had a long consistent career in fashion.

Her accomplishments (although brief) will forever be remembered in the industry. Guaranteed.

i still feel like crying everytime i visit this thread or look at her photos on my wall.

god i miss her.

it's even worse to here that she died not from the impact, but from the fire. however, hearing about the condition of the driver, with burns over most of his body makes you wonder if she was the lucky one in the situation. maybe sometimes it's better to be granted heaven rather than living in a way that is less than the normal life she was used to up until that point in time when the accident happened.

Reading that part about how she was basically trapped between the two cars in a fire ... it's really horrific. I don't even want to imagine. It's so tragic when a life is taken so young.

these are all of the pictures i could find of her on firstview. i figure it's good to post them, and it makes it easy for her family to find pictures of her if they visit this thread some time in the future.

i had a really hard time finding pictures of her smiling. it makes me wonder if she liked modeling.
