Hedi Slimane - Designer

What’s Hedi Slimane’s Next Move After Celine?

...an Instagram account called Hedi Slimane Homme came online. The first post recapped Slimane’s “Black Tie” collection for Yves Saint Laurent in 1999, when the young designer burst on the scene with a virile vision of men’s style that was hardcore but also tender, like the rock ’n’ rollers he documented in graffiti-covered clubs. The account—widely assumed to be run by Slimane or someone close to him—has also published archival images from Slimane’s groundbreaking run at Dior Homme in the aughts, when he introduced his now-signature dagger-sharp silhouette to the masses, and from his return to Saint Laurent from 2012-2016 when he moved to LA and found grungy inspiration in SoCal’s surf scenes.

According to a source familiar with his thinking, Slimane is still singing the same tune. The source tells me that Slimane is currently in LA resting and taking photographs, which doesn’t sound like a man in a hurry to establish a new fashion house. (Remember, he took a five year break in between Dior and Saint Laurent, and another two years off before Celine.) The source also emphasized the critical importance of Slimane’s relationship with the highly-trained atelier teams at YSL and Celine, the institutional skill required to execute his most elevated, imaginative ideas. It would be a tall order to build a similar workshop on his own; if Slimane thinks of himself as a couturier, and I believe he does, an independent venture isn’t going to cut it.

So what options does that leave Slimane? The source cautioned that the Hedi Slimane Homme account is for purely archival purposes, but the posts read to me like a pointed message to an industry in the midst of upheaval. Slimane’s work is much more subversive and innovative than many give him credit for, and Hedi Slimane Homme feels like a reminder: I crashed Paris Fashion Week with androgyny and indie sleaze when your favorite new androgynous indie sleazester was still in diapers! Is this one sign that Slimane is throwing his rakish felt fedora in the ring during a moment where many brands are—or should be—looking to a proven creative dynamo and commercial rainmaker?

Even though I doubt it, Hedi is the best person to give them their super-basic-extra-luxe, which they want so much for Gucci and don't currently have from the Ancora guy.

I can imagine him doing a new version of Samuel Beckett bag (which I would buy).

crazy if so he left with lawyers fighting for his contract rights and now back into the lion's cave .......also he said he was so attached to do a french house with french couture history etc ...i guess now its time to switch to his italian side lol

if boring has so much of this news why we don't hear it from miss tweed or puck ?

You're making such an astute observation about Hedi.

There's this sad irony in people calling him "emo" while simultaneously proving his point by only appreciating his work after he leaves each house.

They mock him but then their behavior (only valuing him in retrospect) probably reinforces those exact emotional patterns he may have developed from past experiences....

It's actually quite profound when you think about it - he revolutionized menswear at Dior Homme, transformed Saint Laurent, and brought his vision to Celine, yet people seem to fully recognize the impact only after he's gone. and still continue to minimize his impact.

The whole "emo boy" dismissal probably hits deeper than people realize, especially if he's had experiences of not feeling appreciated in his youth....

Contract negotiations at Dior with Maria Grazia make more sense in this context, I presume MGC isnt letting them buy her out or otherwise remove her to replace her with Hedi...

If this is true then Maria's refusal to align herself with Dior is nothing short of astonishing, a striking display of both ignorance and audacity. From her body of work, one might surmise a certain detachment from reality, bordering on delusion. Maria is nobody to hassle Dior. Dior tells you to leave - you leave with a smile Maria.

I hope it's true just for the drama.

Is this in response to the article that was posted?

I'm starting to think a lot of the calls for Hedi to retire permanently from fashion is just... people not needing clothes. Hedi mostly sells clothes that one can wear regularly in the their day-to-day life. Spend long enough in the game as a fashion/lux customer and eventually you'll have all the very nice easily wearable business tailoring you need, and a new collection of Hedi suits is less exciting. You take Hedi tailoring for granted because you wear it to go about your life. It's a different niche that invites a different mindset and relationship to the clothing than, say, purchasing formal gowns than are explicitly special occasion pieces.
