i like the way Slimaine expresses his 'vision' with something more than just clothes, it's interesting to see what he will do for Liberation, already 'booking' my May 6 issue :p

Hedi Slimane says he always wanted to be a journalist. His dream will come true, on May 6 at least, when he will be guest editor of Liberation, France’s left-leaning daily newspaper. Slimane is mum on details, but hints the pages will reflect his current fascination with London’s burgeoning rock scene. After all, Slimane has spent more than a year tracking and documenting Pete Doherty, companion of Kate Moss, frontman of Babyshambles, formerly of The Libertines and whom he characterizes as a poet and perhaps the most important performer of our times. But a worthy tribute cannot be fully expressed in one issue of a tabloid. To wit: A book of Slimane’s photographs of Doherty, titled “London: Birth of a Cult,” is slated to be published in July by Karl Lagerfeld’s 7L imprint.

my my my...this boy is very busy...so many side projects...
but i guess they're all connected...i'm sure he gets his 'ideas' for his collections from the musicians he hangs around with...so it all come back full circle...

lucky guy to have so many opportunities....

thanks for the topic lena...:flower:

My... I just hope this indie-rock fascination of his comes to an end after that book... It´s getting somewhat boring, besides I don´t think Pete´s the sole driver of that whole indie-rock scene.

Don´t get me wrong, I love his clothes, but the inspirations are a bit too obvious lately... but then again, Ann and others are not doing any better in my opinion (her constant obsession with Patti Smith, Raf Simon´s use of New Order LP covers some seasons ago, ...).

indie rock inspiration is nothing new...
neither is copy protected by Ann D.& others right?

heidi has been on this indie wagon from day one
and he's been doing it his way, no blame

agreed

Well, it´s not really his from day one I think. He actually started going into this theme from F/W 2004 onwards, that Berlin-inspired "Luster" collection was rather punk/goth/street kid than indie-rock.

Yes, he gives his own stamp on this whole indie-rock-fashion-movement, without doubt. I can´t even deny that I liked it, because that whole look seems so right and easy to me (S/S 2005). On the other hand - and that´s probably because I like the music around it - that image is everywhere right now, there´s just no thrill anymore when Hedi´s showing us a sweaty Pete Doherty on stage, b/w, as in V Magazine... especially when he´s intending to show the same concept again for his upcoming book.

It´s nice to see though that he defines his aesthetics not solely with his fashion, that´s where I give him credit. All the books he released so far eventually completed the cycle with his collections. My suggestion:

Berlin -> F/W 2003
Stage -> S/S 2004, S/S 2005
"London" -> F/W 2005

I think it's awesome that he is able to do so much and draw inspiration from it, I do find it ironic that the look he promoting and designing is often not affordable to the people who inspire it....please don't get me wrong, I love most of it, but could hardly afford it, and some days, I think I look like I'm wearing it;)

as to Pete Dougherty being the most important performer of our time...I beg to differ:rolleyes: (and I like him too)

A real fashion designer is a creative person. This is just another way he expresses his creativity. I say HURRAH! for him. :flower: :woot:

Thanks for the info Lena, I'd love to take a look at this issue when it comes out (I really hope it's available for consumption online). Hedi Slimane is one of my idols, some may say his vision is rather 'tunneled' but I love how he pursues it so passionately and explores/expresses different sides of it through his various collections and photography projects. If I ever get a chance to break into entertainment I'd love to work with him on some creative projects, that would be a dream come true.

here the update from wwd of today :flower:

Hedi Slimane’s dream of being a journalist came true on Friday when the issue he guest-edited for France’s left-leaning newspaper Liberation hit newsstands. Called “London Calling,” the front (and back) page featured a photograph Slimane took of Pete Doherty, companion of Kate Moss, frontman of Babyshambles and formerly of the Libertines. Slimane’s fascination with London’s rock scene unfolded throughout the paper he designed via photographs — many taken by himself — and pieces written by the likes of Paul Simonon of The Clash and Alison Mosshart of The Kills.

I'll pass. I've seen enough of Hedi's pathetic Doherty obsession in... i-D, French Vogue, V, Arena Homme +, etc. Time to move on, Heds!
