I know that, just wondering whether it's considered to be like cheating or something. Like saying you're a non-smoker when you actually smoke on the weekends (I know, worst comparison ever!).

It's a personal thing, like just between you and God. Wearing the scarf is compulsory but everything else is optional. So if you sort of wear the scarf Monday to Friday but leave it off weekends, it's your choice.

I know loads of girls who wear the hijab but when it comes to social events such as their birthday, friends birthday, wedding; they take it off. It's your choice. Don't know how to explain it, maybe someone else can do a better job.

its actually a good comparison. it varies with different cultures which is what gets confusing at times.

That girl in #487 looks amazing! This might sound like a bit of a silly question, but what do you think about women who aren't muslim wearing a hijab? Like if they are in a country where it's common or something? Because I've herd of several cases where women have done so.

In Middle East, most foreigners do wear hijab to blend in and out of respect for the local culture. And I think its something very modest and stylish in itself, just think of it as yet another accessory.

When in Rome do as the Romans
The tourists can't enter churches in Rome (and probably in all Itally and more countries) with tank tops or other revealing clothes, is inappropriate and disrespectful. I think the hijab may also be inappropriate in certain situations

^^^was a piece to protect the hairstyle while driving, or from little rain or wind or cold, I have nothing against when is used for that or just because you like it, but right now could look outdated. Those scarves had no religious significance as the hijab have.

Many Iranian women wear a headscarf + manteau (long coat). Some still wear chadors, though. It really depends on the family. Also, sometimes grandmothers (or, more likely, great grandmothers) may be more comfortable in the chador while the younger generation sticks to the headscarf only.

Iranian women wear head scarves because they are forced too, let's get that straight. They're subject to very hard sentences if they don't - so are tourists. That's why I have a problem with posting pictures of them in this thread. The chador is a different story. The women who wear the chador wear it for religious reasons.

Yep! Though some women still do wear the headscarf for religious reasons too. Some of the women in my family consider themselves "liberal Muslims" and wear headscarves for that reason. As you pointed out, though, it is law in Iran so many, many women wear it solely for that reason. I didn't state that because I didn't want to get into a political discussion (we could go on and on about Iran!) ... just solely answering the fashion question about what Iranian women wear on a daily basis.

They are super gorgeous and they all look like movie stars I had my BF's family from Iran over last month, and they were all stunning. I saw a wedding video from Tehran and holy mother, they know how to dress! The bride wore a lace head dress kind of thing for the religious ceremony, it was amazing (Kate Moss go home )

I just can't bring myself to post the pics when I know how most of them feel about it It makes me feel icky.

I do think it's mostly older women who wear the chador, right? It used to be worn at funerals as far as I know...
