Similar discussions have happened in the past, but they referred to mostly advertising jobs.

I am curious to find out how much major fashion photographers (Meisel, Mert & Marcus, Demarchelier, Ellen Von Unwerth) make for editorial work? How much do they, essentially, get paid for an editorial

Are they paid by the major fashion pubs (the Vogues and W)? If so, how much?

(Roughly, obviously).

Also, would they shoot for minor magazines if their rate was met? Or are they only interested in shooting for the majors?

Obviously nobody will know the correct answer, but any insights, informed opinions or such would be appreciated.

I read an interview of Dennis Freedman (W's former creative director) in 032c a while ago where he said he never paid a photographer more than $2000 for an editorial.

At least $100,000 if you're a big ph like Mario Testino. Actually over $200k if you're Mario.

1 page of ads in US Vogue = $200k...so it's not a big deal

In this situation the contract is a problem. Usually they only can shoot for Conde Nast and for various fashion brands.

Depends on the level of the photographer and the level of the magazine.
That said I believe most photographers make more doing advertising or commercial work than editorial.

The key point here is in the title ...."major fashion photographer". And yes, more is paid for ads than eds. But major photogs can demand their going rate and major fashion mags will pay it.

I had a photographer who had a friend working at Vogue, tell me that at that time (about 10 years ago) Vogue was paying about $50,000 or more for major photogs to do a shoot.

For the rest of the photographers who shoot for lesser magazines: they don't get paid much, if anything at all. Editorials are looked as a stepping stones to be able to get paid work (ads, catalogs, etc.. Doing eds is a way to gain notoriety and to build a better portfolio ...
