How to Get Work in Fashion Magazine Publishing (see Post #1 for related threads)

sorry if this is a stupid question, but if you don't need a degree in journalism to become a fashion editior, what type of degree do you need? j/w

you don't need a degree...;)

...you need style...which cannot be taught...

pucci...

as above...
they style the images which appear in a magazine....
basically tell a story-through imagery...

FYI-many fashion editors do not write even the titles of their stories...
there are WRITERS>>>who do all of this..and THEY have journalism degrees.

well i used to come up with my own three titles by editorial i styled and the chief editor used to choose which one they thought was best..

one needs something more than plain read and write skills when has to come up with two to three editorials month after month.. not to say i had to write all the fashion editorial intros...
personally i wouldnt let a 'writer' mess up my fashion editorials, it was out of question.

*basically it doesnt hurt at all to start as an assistant stylist who has a creative writing or history of fashion degree ;)

I dont know... your grammar in this post is horrific at best, and you seem to have done all right. maybe writing and reading skills ARE over-rated afterall?

:D obviously.. english is NOT my mother language plus i wasnt a fashion editor for an english magazine, voila :p

 in my experience, a fashion magazine editor (which is what Fashionistasista said she wanted to be) is different to a fashion editor. To be a fashion magazine editor is the same as being a DIY or science or horse-riding magazine editor! 99% of the fashion magazine editors I know had no interest in fashion, it was simply a move up the career ladder that landed them the job on a fashion magazine.

Of course it helps to have an interest in the subject you work for, but the main skills looked for in any magazine editor (depending on the size of the company) seems to be the ability to oversee the heads of each department, creating concepts for each issue, have excellent writing/editing/IT skills etc. so for someone wishing to work as a magazine editor, I would definitely encourage them to do a journalism degree and keep up with whatever's current in the IT world.

As for being a fashion editor/stylist - I don't reckon any of that can be taught by a college. You either have it or you don't :p

You do need to realise that there are many, many posters here whose first language is not English, and not every magazine is written in English.

I'm sure it wouldn't hinder anyone's career to learn another language (aiming to be a mag editor or otherwise) and if I knew it as well as Lena writes English I'd feel very proud of myself. :flower:

Exactly. A fashion editor/stylist needs no formal education and writing and grammar skills are not a priority either. But to be an Editor-in-Chief of a magazine, a rigorous education and knowledge of journalism and culture is important.

^^agreed...^_^
i guess the original question needs clarifying...
