i-D Fall 2009 : Linder Sterling, James Franco, Frida Giannini & Shakira

^I don't mean to offend you, and I'm not really a Shakira fan, but just because you don't listen to her songs or you don't talk about her doesn't mean, that 'nodoby' does it anymore and it certainly doesn't mean she isn't popular anymore. 'She Wolf' was quite a big hit in most territories :flower:

um Shakira has been a pretty big deal in the West since her Laundry Service album. and that dreadfully catchy shewolf song is everywhere.
Still don't like the cover though.-_-

Haha, I see. In her golden days, everybody here was singing her songs and they'd would be transmitted in the radio all the time. Now nobody listens to her songs and nobody talks about her. Don't think she'll ever get to have that huge success again ever, not even close to that. What do you mean by for better or for worse ? ;)
the golden era, everybody and nobody parts of your post are subjective since in this corner, her golden era has nothing to do with La Tortura and clearly your everybody is my nobody and vice versa .
but regarding the huge success, she's trying but yeah, it's definitely harder than the first time she came around cause she basically tried all tricks in one shot, she took the easy route and sold herself as a one-hit wonder when she decided to reach the english-speaking market so even if releasing more 'inspired' material now would still give her more credibility in the long run, I'm not sure at this point of her career she feels like she has to take the 'long run' when she can basically take more clothes off or collaborate/hang up to a hip singer as her last resort. Obviously she only represents a year or a season for chart-loving ears and she probably knows that, and she probably also knows that remaining is better than being completely forgotten and that there's always the kind of customer that explores and is bound to stumble upon older or hidden material where her actual, non-compromised talent resides.
Anyway, I don't think she's entirely to blame for the direction of her career, considering there's a strong set of stereotypes for Latin American singers in the US that belong to the very American 'Latino' term/business and which, if you want fast success, you have to eventually subscribe to otherwise you'll be another random/hard-to-decode foreign act that will never really appeal to the general taste.. stereotypes sell better, esp for the entertainment industry and then for minorities, which are the ones that crave and support an over-the-top (and may I say unrealistic) taste of home.. and it's definitely more comfortable to see your cliché ideas of Latin America (in this case) illustrated and confirmed by someone who only knows how to pout and move hips than someone who occasionally criticizes a society you're actually unfamiliar with (early Shakira).

Man, I got all worked up here for Shakira :wacko:
the 'for better or for worse' part didn't mean much, just the above, even if she's talented, I don't think her current work warrants the attention.

Uh ?
Of course people still listen to her songs. I'm making a comparison between when she was successful and now. What happens now is that she's never talked and her songs aren't transmitted on the radio anymore. People that I know never listens to her either anymore. When she was famous everybody was listening to Shakira. I didn't say that I don't listen to Shakira anymore, Im saying that based on what I see ... okay ?
So she's not popular anymore, at least in my country.
The countries where she has those projects or whatever, it seems she's still popular.

^....Uh what?!?

All the things you say may be so, but like Mulletproof said, it's all one big case of subjectiveness, and says in essence nothing at all about her overall state op popularity.

God, this took me a while. Well definitely La Tortura didn't belong to her golden age, it was like one of the first songs she's started to make in spanish which was alongside with another guy after her golden days. Yeah, I don't even think she could nor should try to be that successful again, she's already known.
Truth is, in that time even if you didn't like Shakira, you would have to take with her songs ... everybody, I mean really everybody was singing them, you'd turn the radio on and bam Shakira.
