Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish are masters in the art of glitzing it up for charity. Jefferson Hack seeks inspiration for some perfect cocktail outfits for their upcoming VIP soirée

For me, the official start of the party season is usually heralded by a stuffed email inbox and a pile-up of printed invitations for misjudged charity events and dinners best avoided. This year, however, it was signalled by the arrival of an unusually interesting invitation.
A decadently sized, silver foil-blocked brochure requested the pleasure of my company for "Grey Goose character and cocktails". Dress code: cocktail couture. So what makes this salubrious event, with its intriguing dress code, different from the rest?
Five fantasy cocktail bars have been created by artists and designers for the Elton John Aids Foundation event on November 15. Burberry's Christopher Bailey has designed a metal-studded, armoured bar; Dinos Chapman has remodelled an ice-cream van into a mobile drinking dispensary, while his fellow artist Sam Taylor-Wood has taken inspiration from a soldiers' mobile mess, creating an off-duty bar; Elizabeth Hurley and shoe designer Patrick Cox, inspired by a pair of his crystallised high heels, have concocted a mirrored installation with LCD lighting to resemble a flattened mirror ball.
Each of the bars will be auctioned at the VIP soirée, which sees celebrity bartenders Salvatore Calabrese, from the London private members' club Fifty, and Colin Field, from the Paris Ritz's Hemingway Bar, creating signature cocktails.
The host for the evening, the dapper David Furnish, has created his own piece - a Las Vegas-themed aquabar, with two pole dancers and a "live" mermaid (model) in a tank. "It's a bit mad, but so is Vegas these days," he says of the city to which he and partner Elton John have been commuting, due to the singer's show schedule.

Last year, the ''White Tie and Tiara Ball" raised £6.1 million for the charity, set up by Sir Elton in 1992, which supports more than 4,000 HIV/Aids-prevention projects in 55 countries.
Sir Elton and Furnish have cleverly proved that charity events can mix entertainment, celebrity and cause to powerful effect. So what is the secret to a successful event? "Details, details, details," says Furnish. "Beautiful flowers, simple, delicious food, great music. And never underestimate the importance of perfect lighting."
As for cocktail couture, what exactly does he intend by establishing this dress code? "For me, it's about the details; making statements with little, individual flourishes. I love diamond jewellery on men, and pocket scarves, cravats, cufflinks. The trick is to throw it together so it's natural and not contrived. That's real style." Inspired by Furnish's theme, I have put together a capsule collection for the cocktail au fait.
Yves St Laurent's lounge look, with a satin collar and grey mink scarf, could easily be worn with black jeans or just as designer Stefano Pilati styles it, with oversized, baggy grey slacks. Scarves and cravats can look camp or contrived, so should be handled with care. The French fashion house Lanvin's approach - floaty silk ties and cravats worn askew - looks really modern.
A cool twist on smart/casual dress comes courtesy of Maison Martin Margiela, in the shape of a simple, elegant, black evening suit. Alternatively, Turnbull & Asser's smoking jacket is a classic wardrobe staple for a cocktail and cigar connoisseur who doesn't want to be too cutting-edge.
For a bit of bling to top it all off, look no further than American menswear designer Thom Browne's debut collection for jeweller Harry Winston. It's easy to imagine cocktail-culture icons of the past, such as Noël Coward or F Scott Fitzgerald, wearing these diamond-encrusted, platinum pieces.
Surprisingly, it's the rougher-edged style icons that inspire Furnish: artist Francis Bacon, "whose approach to life, drinking, dressing and painting were all inextricably linked", and hell-raiser Richard Burton, "a drinker with the tempestuous lifestyle to match".
As for Furnish, the morning after a decadent cocktail party, he turns to his preferred hangover cure, "a full English". Exquisite taste.
