Men should be able to buy exquisite lingerie that their partners want to wear without feeling embarrassed - the first step is to get the size write, says Jefferson Hack
Valentine's day page In your imagination everything is going to go according to plan for Valentine's Day. Her eyes will light up as she receives the slim boxes and begins to unwrap the packaging.
Beneath layers of sheer tissue will hide the finest lingerie. Your choices will convey originality, confidence and intuition. She will be so impressed that she'll immediately try it all on. And of course it will fit perfectly.
How did you get it so right? How did you suddenly make the transformation from layman to connoisseur of feminine finery?
When it comes to men buying their loved ones designer lingerie, there are many practical pitfalls, gaping sexual clichés and potential embarrassments to be wary of.
One of my first disasters was a virginal white lace padded bra I bought in the 1980s for a girl who only wore black and didn't need any padding. Since then there have been fewer backfires.
Men should know how to buy lingerie, and they should know how to do it with style.
If the idea is daunting and slightly unnerving, then a surprisingly relaxed initiation is on offer at Agent Provocateur's boudoir-style boutiques.
But creative director Joe Corre offers a warning: "If you don't know her size, then look at the label inside her bra and knickers."
The next hurdle is what to choose. Just remember that pleasing only your fantasy is a classic mistake. Generally speaking, the more you know about your partner's taste the easier it becomes to be adventurous and get it right.
If you can find the time to browse together, while in a department store or even by window shopping, you can soon discover what catches her eye.
I highly recommend Coco-De-Mer, which really is the connoisseur's choice.
Founded by Sam Roddik (daughter of Body Shop founder Anita), this Covent Garden salon and boutique stocks limited-edition handcrafted lingerie.
Inside the plush, ornately decorated space which is home to a range of erotic rare books and prints, there is even a wooden ''confession" box changing room which allows you to peep in as your beloved tries on different pieces.
For beautiful, enchanting lingerie, try Strumpet and Pink. It's wearable art, elevating the decorative nature of lingerie to new levels. Lascivious, another creative handmade label, makes provocative but elegant creations.
Some may blush at the suggestiveness of some of the boudoir pieces. But the likes of Corre (and his former partner Serena Rees) and Sam Rodick have gone a long way to take the stigma away from erotica.
And where once most British men would find it hard to buy lingerie, they are now more liberated.
As for women, they have come to expect a new world of choice, thanks to Kylie Minogue and Dita Van Teese and her celebration of the burlesque.
Empowering, provocative, sensual, playful, humorous, naïve and decadent, the opportunity is all there, gentleman.
There's just one more thing to remember, as Corre, who likes to have the last word, reminds us: "Don't be cheap! Valentine's is a special day, so push the boat out." buying for valentine's
