It's not a great time to be a young fashion designer; to be staking your future on the floundering fortunes of the most frivolous of luxury markets. In the interest of raising spirits this London Fashion Week, actress, icon and all-round marvel Tilda Swinton is wading into the fray, lending support by raising the profile of the most promising up-and-coming designers. She's modelling a selection of their pieces for the cover of the new edition of cool-person bible Another Magazine.
Swinton was made for such a venture. As Jefferson Hack, editor of Another, says: "Tilda was absolutely my first choice. As an actress, she is by far the most inventive, original risk-taker with fashion. She embraced the idea too; she brought a lot of herself and a lot of magic to the pictures, to interpreting the clothes." Swinton introduces the work of Peter Pilotto, Sandra Backlund, Louise Goldin and Craig Lawrence - all of whom are super-edgy knitwear designers, which might suggest that the global economic crisis is inspiring a renaissance in traditional, homey fabrications.
