Jessica Simpson has fallen for John Mayer – and she can hardly contain her delight.

"She's head over heels," a source close to the pop star, 26, tells PEOPLE in its new cover story. "She's telling friends, 'I'm in love.' "

Indeed, Simpson, in New York City to promote her album, A Public Affair, and attend the MTV VMAs, showed her support Wednesday night when she and dad Joe slipped into Mayer's concert in Wantagh, NY, about halfway through his set. They nabbed seats with the sound crew and watched from stage left as Mayer sang his Grammy-winning hit "Daughters."

But he didn't fail to notice that his biggest fan was on hand. Ending his 75-minute performance with the single "Gravity," Mayer "turned to Jessica in the middle of (the song)," says an onlooker, "and smiled and sang to her."
Even her dad, Joe, is a fan of her new beau. "I love John Mayer," he told PEOPLE Tuesday at the New York City release party for Simpson's new album. "I love his music. I love his talent. The last time he was at the House of Blues in L.A., I went by myself to see him play."

The most important thing to Joe? "If my daughter's happy, then I'm happy," he says. "And if she finds love, then I'm in love with the fact that she finds happiness. It's been a tough year for her. A lot of disappointment. And my greatest joy as a father is to see my baby be happy."

Simpson and Mayer, 28, first met when Simpson was still married to Nick Lachey, 32. After her November 2005 separation, they bumped into each other again in June at the New York City nightclub Double Seven, where a source tells PEOPLE Simpson was "flirting up a storm" with both Mayer and actor Jared Leto.

Eventually Mayer, who's currently touring with Sheryl Crow, passed the ultimate test: He babysat Simpson's maltipoo, Daisy. "If you're in with Daisy," a Simpson pal tells PEOPLE, "you're in with her!"

LATEST: JESSICA SIMPSON has slammed tabloid reports she is dating singer JOHN MAYER and insists the two are just friends.
The 25-year-old star appeared on US talk show THE VIEW today (05SEP06), where she discussed the rumours surrounding her personal life.
Simpson appeared on the first day of the 10th season of the show as a favour to new co-host ROSIE O'DONNELL, who supported her when she was first starting out.
O'Donnell asked, "Is everything going good for you, you're in a good place, you're happy...' Simpson replied, "I'm in a really good place..." O'Donnell then tried to get to the bottom of tabloid reports that she is dating Mayer, prodding her with, "You don't want to say, but maybe?" Simpson sighed and shook her head saying, "I love it that she just goes right there....I'm actually not dating John Mayer." O'Donnell feigned shock saying, "You mean People magazine was wrong?" The American publication featured Simpson on the cover last week (ends03SEP06) with the headline, 'I'm in love,' referring to Simpson's reported new relationship with Mayer.
She added, "And they put this quote saying that I'm in love! You know, he's my friend, I've known him for a couple years."

"I'm in a really good place," Jessica told Rosie on The View yesterday. She added, "[People magazine] put this quote saying that I'm in love! I'm actually not dating John Mayer. You know, he's my friend, I've known him for a couple years."
And, it seems that Simpson and Mayer will remain just that - friends only.
As PerezHilton.com was the first to report, John posted a cryptic message on his blog late last week, telling us "Don't believe the hype." Because as quickly as it sizzled, the Mayer/Simpson fling has now fizzled.

Their relationship, while bona fide, was hardly one for the ages. It is, a Mayer pal tells Us Weekly, "a '2' her camp spun into an '11.'" In fact, a Mayer friend tells Us, the musician has lost a lot of respect for his brief fling and "now he will stay away from her. He thinks it's desperate. An attempt for her to stay in the spotlight."

On August 28, a Simpson source assured Us the couple would spend time together in NYC throughout the upcoming week. Simpson, according to this source, was looking forward to Mayer's August 30 concert at New York's Jones Beach. Instead, Us learned, she opted to stay in and have what a hotel employee called "a slumber party" with sister Ashlee and a number of other girls. A reservation was made (by whom is unclear) in Mayer's name at the city's Soho Grand Hotel, where Simpson checked in August 28. Sniffs a Mayer pal, "He has an apartment in the city. Why would he stay at the Soho Grand?" By September 4, a Simpson confidant was insisting that she and Mayer had had late-night trysts on August 30 and 31, and hinted that she had even spent the weekend in upstate New York (Mayer had a concert there). But she and Ashlee partied until 3 a.m. Saturday night at NYC club Don Hill's. In fact, the two were never spotted together during Simpson's entire New York visit. As Us Weekly went to press, the realization that Mayer had moved on seemed to have set in, and the same Simpson pal began to backtrack and confirm the cooling-off, saying, "She met a guy who was scared away by all the attention." After a false start, Jessica Simpson and John Mayer are giving dating a try again. The couple met up for an hour-long lunch at Paradise Cove Beach Café in Malibu, California, on November 12.

“She didn’t eat much,” a witness says. “She drank double vodka cranberries. When they got up, Jessica was rubbing his back. You could definitely tell they were on a date.” Mayer left a $40 tip on the $100 bill.

Is it for real this time? Even Simpson, 26, and Mayer, 29, aren’t sure yet.

“She’s taking her time with it,” a Simpson pal says.

Adds a Mayer source, “It’s a flirtation. I wouldn’t call it full-on dating, but there is a fondness. He doesn’t like the attention, but he likes her. He wants to avoid the public scrutiny of last time.”

What’s up next for the couple? Separate Thanksgiving holidays with family (hers in Texas, his in Connecticut). Then, he’ll spend downtime in NYC songwriting, while she heads to Louisiana to film the Luke Wilson comedy Blonde Ambition. Could an on-set visit be next? Stay tuned.

I don't get why people think they are a cute couple or that they should be together. While it's hard to judge and it's stupid that people say they're dating just because they went out to eat, I don't know what I'd do with myself if they got together lol I love him!! His blog is absolutely hysterical and he's really intelligent. Now, I think Jessica is smarter than her ditzy reputation allows (I didn't say smart, just smarter), but it's just still on a different plane than John. Just so so different, and although they're both in Hollywood I sincerely hope this isn't true because then I think John would be recognized more for "dating Jessica" than his music, and he's so talented that I think his music speaks volumes and it would take away from it if he became some creepy paparazzi shot celebrity. I doubt anything serious will ever occur though- tan, buff, diamond-earring Nick couldn't deal with her princessy ways so I have trouble believing John would.
