Hi all, I'm a newbie here and I have some questions here to ask. I've always been interested in jewlery shopping and have always got compliments on what I have purchased or chosen for friends. :p I am currently considering going into this business and would like to know more about the career opportunities in this industry. I would like to know what I need to prepare (any school I need to attend? Getting a GIA certificate..etc.) Also, would appreciate any rec. in this topic. Is it hard to find a job in this area?? Will I be starved...ahaha... Thanks a lot for replying!

help's on the way

Hi. I planned on putting my fine jewelry designs out there through my own label in a few years after jewelry school myself, but I've put that plan on the shelf for now because I'm doing fashion design & merchandising instead.

You have to decide what you wnat to do in the business exactly, like for me I design the jewelry on paper for easy ref. for I dont forget the design, (which then you would design on the 3-D CAD program which makes your designs on the computer which can be turned into casts for the actual jewelry so you get exactlly what you want because you designed it). For school, you NEED most of the courses that GIA offers as to how to run & operate your jewelry business to sell your designs under your own label.
GIA is the best school in the US if you want to have your own jewelry designs put out there in my opinion

what education do I need just to have a jewelry collection...

Hi. I plan on having a manufactor make my jewelry, and have them supply the gold and the diamonds, and I would just send them my CAD castings so they can make them exactly how I want. Is that all there is to it? (And then launch the fine jewelry with my fashion label at the same time)?

Jewelry classes.

Ok, recently I have grown such a huge interest in jewelries. I have looked up for designers jewelries and I was just soo appalled at the prices: 2400 for a ring with a big quartz stone on top? I mean this is just quartz!!! so i had a thought: maybe i should learn to make them myself. Do you know anywhere that offers classes that teach fine jewelry in LA?
