What nurtures me destroys me?

Have you seen the girl who has that tatoo on Americas Next Top Model?

I'm going to post not having read this entire thread. I just want to mention that you do not have to go to a fashion school to be in the fashion or apparel industry unless of course you are trying to be a designer or something else that requires techincal skill. The career range in fashion is the same as in any other industry from the "glamour" end (modeling, agent, designer) to more creative aspects (marketing, advertisting) to business (legal, accounting, sales). For marketing or journalism you can go to any college and a degree and then seek fashion related jobs and work you're way up and around.

So my advice is to intern and read, read, read. Then you'll start to uncover things about the industry that may be of interest to you. Also, I would suggest if you're old enough to go out to events and meet people and talk to them about what they do.

As someone who holds a BS in Apparel Merchandising from a US university I find this thread very helpful and wish I would have found it 5 years ago before I started in my major

P.S. I'll be moving to NYC in June....can someone give me any info on starting my career search in the fashion/ entertainment industry...any events or places for good networking

*sigh* i'm so desperately looking a company that will hire summer position for technical designs .... >.< It's like the only thing that i like but have NO idea where to start looking... any ideas? I live in Toronto

I don't know if this is the right place to put this but...

I am 17 and I already know for sure that fashion is what my heart desires. I don't want to leave the United States for my studies so I was considering applying at Parsons School of Design in New York City.
I will be taking a Design Management Course this Summer at Parsons so that will hopefully give me some insight as to how to the school is, however, I was hoping to hear from some people who have attended Parsons and how they liked/disliked their experience there.
Also, how hard is it to be accepted into this school? Are their priorities for future alumni based for the most part on artisitic talent, or academic scores? Do contacts in the fashion industry help?
Thank you!

I could be totally wrong, but it seems like design would be the hardest field in fashion to breal into.

I am planning on interning for a Fashion PR company or Fashion merchandising of sorts, but I want to know what it takes to make it to the top as a Fashion Director. I realize thats an insanely prestigous position, but I set big goals- why not!?!? Anyone have any experience/ outlook for me? : )

How can I get a marketing job in fashion?

Provided I got an MBA focus in marketing, but the previous career is in engineering?

hmm well im a junior in high school now and i need to start thinking about WAT EXACTLY I WANT TO DO WITH MY LIFE.. and ever since freshman year, i've been confident and passionate about becoming a fashion designer...

but lately i've been getting second thoughts after doing a lot of researching (i mean A LOT. like everyday i would surf on google about just fashoin design, which is wat i did today and found this site). i mean, im just nervous that i might not make it in the industry seeing how... hard it is to find a good-paying (and enjoying at the same time) after graduating.

and i've also wanted to become a writer/journalist ever since middle school (i've always been a bit career-oriented. lol) and would LOVE to work for a magazine (i subscribe to over like 10 magazines cuz im a bit obssessed with them) as a fashion editor (styling clothes seems fun!) or fashion journalist (attend tons of fashion shows! nuff said!)

basically, i just want to noe if 1) getting into fashion design is a really good idea because i dont want to end up working off a low salary and living in a crappy apartment. 2) if the academy of arts is a good school (i have a high chance of getting into fidm because i was offered to apply early in my junior year but i dont really like fidm after my tour). 3) if san fran and los angeles are good places to find jobs relating to fashion design. 4) if its a good idea to go into a university to get a bachelor degree in journalism and THEN study fashion design in a fashion/art school.

haha i wrote too much. sorry, i just had to clear my head. its in a bit of a jumble right now, and senior year is coming up in only a few months and im as confused and lost as heck!

SO WHOEVER CAN HELP ME WITH MY NEAR-END-OF-JUNIOR-YEAR-CRISIS, I THANK U SOOO SOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!

oops correction to my last post:

hard it is to find a good-paying (and enjoying at the same time) JOB after graduating.***

OH and is the art institute a good school as well?

and would taking fashion classes in high school help me at all in any way? im taking fashoin tech and an ROP class in careers in fashion for my senior year.

again, THANK YOUUUU SOOO MUCH!!

*hugs anyone and eveyrone who helps me*

I hope this is the right thread for this...

I'm in high school now, and I have an obsession (not stalkerish) with modeling, but I am too short to actually model, and I probably would prefer behind the scenes work. I was wondering if anyone could help me find some career ideas... I love models, make up, and magazines (which made me think of being an editor or something). I would love to put all of those factors in my career path, or at least 2 of them. Any suggestions?

^ you can try being a makeup artist, a fashion stylist, a model's booker or a scout for new faces..
