Jonathan Anderson - Designer, Creative Director of JW Anderson & Christian Dior

Loewe Fall 2023 has got to be my favorite collection of his. Many ideas, many of them artful and surprising but all them looked pretty and somehow that feels like a good aesthetic compass for his work at Dior : inventive designs that make for a fresh and charming allure.

Having reached the pinnacle of prestigious houses, how long do you all think Jonathan Anderson will stay at Dior, and what could he go onto next?

He's still quite young at 41, but doesn't strike me as the type of person to want to grow old at one maison ala Lagerfeld. And now that he's pivotting the JW Anderson brand into a 'lifestyle proposition' focused on homewares, I wonder what his long term plans are.

As much as some might want it to happen, it seems unlikely that he would be fired for simply a creative mismatch given how much Delphine continues to champion him, unless sales truly start to plummet.

So when the time comes it would seem the only way out is a demotion ala MGC, a sideways move to a comparable house like Louis Vuitton or Chanel, or into freelance consulting work / other creative projects like costuming for movies and theatre. Or he just retires and enjoys collecting art works with those nice LVMH cheques.

What do you think his future will hold?

If his Dior does well, he might spend 6-10 years there, then he "retires" and focuses on consulting, designing costumes for films, curating exhibitions and expanding his brand. I can't see him taking another house after this. He already seems to be burned out.
I have the impression that this tenure is going to be very challenging for him and tiresome for us. In any case, it's not going to be the miracle Delphine probably hoped for.

I am less pessimistic. Unlike Chanel, Dior always has lots of commercial pieces outside the runway collections. As long as the small tweaks keep them fresh, they will keep selling.
Chanel is riskier imho: at the moment they are risking a brand dilution/downgrading in prestige situation.

You could take a gander at what KJ’s up to now to get a feel of life after Dior. In short, you could do nothing for a bit and let the conversation around you fade before throwing your hat into the ring again. The circus moves quickly these days, a few years away and you’re forgotten. As for pressure, sure there is in a commercial sense, but there’s no need for critical acclaim after several years of forgettable rubbish.

Does anybody knows when does JW stuff hits Dior shops? Any date? I am sure they will redesign the whole website like he did for his own brand!

I was told that things will start trickling in in Jan. But I suspect the main batch will be later like March?
Yes early arrival/drops from January to have it all in March. It’s going to be interesting to see how they push some products because the booktotes from the menswear show had more buzz than the logo versions introduced for the women.
So I wonder if they aren’t going to market products for everybody.
And MGC’s last collection will be in stores until May so I wonder if they aren’t going to send it directly to their outlets.

They probably downsized the production of her last collection already.

Issue is.. those booktotes now in January 2025 would feel like old news.

To who? The people who only saw it on social media or to the people who will actually experience them irl?

I try not to always see things through the filter of social media tbh.
But do you really want to wear those pieces now, when influencers wore it 5 months ago?

I agree about the timing of the book totes and the Lady dior releases. They have very little alterations compared to MGC / permanent design, why not cashing on hype and momentum and make them see now but now? JWA Lady Dior is basically the permanent design with an added logo bow...why release it in January instead of immediately after the show? Same for the Book tote that could have been released after the menswear show. It's a silly move from Delphine. Maybe they did not want the releases to be overshadowed by MB CHANEL debut?

I liked the yellow booktote so I wouldn’t mind wearing it.
I wear what I like and for me it’s not so much about influencers because I’m not in their environment. I don’t post on social media. Even when I’m in Paris, with my people from creative fields, influencers are barely around unless you go to an event.

And with those kind of pieces, it’s almost better to get it very early, wear it a lot before seeing a lot of people with them in the streets.

For example I have a Birkin/Kelly fatigue. I see them a lot on social media but in my environment and when I travel, in certain context, I would see a lot of them. But when I’m walking around in any big or important city, I don’t see them that much.

But tbh, I really don’t care about influencers. When I decide to care it’s usually because they are wearing something they bought.

The yellow booktote will literally be my first Dior bag since 2014.

Releasing any JWA Dior product before the usual date would literally devalue any available product from the MGC era. So it would have been stupid and too unrealistic to potentially lose sales. But I hope (because it’s generally what is done) that they limited the production of the MGC Dior stuff all year long. They will probably keep a few best sellers. The same for Kim Jones.

And Dior and Chanel are a bit in two different situations. Jonathan Anderson at Dior will likely do a complete overhaul at the house. So a lot of products from the MGC era will either be discontinued or be redesigned to fit into his creative direction. MGC discontinued totally a lot of bags from the Raf era. And MGC’s era was on the decline at least in terms of the life of the products.

At Chanel, the bags are almost non-descript (they have a specific look for the most part) and they have 2 hits now with the 22 and 25. So Blazy will add more than change for now.

I don’t think that LVMH are afraid of Chanel but they have quite a very different job. Jonathan is doing menswear and womenswear, they have a change of logo and they have quite a big network of stores.

What Gucci did was a pure rush to appease the shareholders when they are going to develop about the strategy of Luca de Meo at the next Assemblée Générale but also to boost sales a bit because nobody is buying the brand now.

And it was a pure rush because the factories were probably producing the resort collection by the team at the same time as the early drops for Demna for it to be in stores that fast.
