Something about this is so vile and grotesque as a lot of this looks like these strange growths and textured crystalline mounds. But because the execution is so good, they become extremely seductive to look at. The intentional abstraction and wrongness on the body is balanced so well it’s in synch with the garments and the actual natural form.
And each time I see a Watanabe collection, I may not always love it (or it takes some time to take in and grasp it all), I always adore and appreciate the technical mastery. The play between the traditional and abstract is perfect. I even enjoy the florals here. They provide a nice dash of lightness to the different shades and textures of black and the navy. Necessary for them to be here, I don’t think any other fabric option would have worked. Maybe a polka dot? But that’s too juvenile for something like this, as everything else is too rigorous and severe.
Just a gorgeous collection. Top of the season and so direct in what it looks to do and say. So few of these this season, so it’s nice to have some positive conviction and confidence on show that works in full!
