Karl Lagerfeld S/S 08 Paris

the details are soo up my alley... space-age punk!!!
I love the black patent slingback/mary janes as well....

The irony in the commercial success of this brand is really the fact that it only became a big money maker the moment when Karl stopped designing!
This show was fun! A good and uplifting show with great music, cast and set but for the most part, terrible clothes.

Karl at that point did not cared at all for his own brand (I think he stopped after the NYC thing) and it showed. That being said, no matter how detached he was from it, it never affected the quality of the construction.
It was funny how he used his own brand at the time for the "politics" around Chanel & Fendi: all the editors were there (because not attending Lagerfeld meant you clearly compromised your chances with the Hot tickets Chanel & Fendi) and all the top girls were also there (If you choose to miss Lagerfeld, you can forget the rest).

This was always such a funny show to me. It's fine but idk, just funny. Especially in comparison to how iconic the Chanel SS08 show was

what was the NYC thing?

what was the NYC thing?
After the H&M collection, he sold his brand to Hilfiger (at the time it was similar to the Versace/Kors thing). His own line that he relaunched in 1999, Lagerfeld Gallery, was fairly successful but very small. He had a lot of licensing deals and stuff and Hilfiger wanted to have a foot in the luxury market.

Karl at that time wanted to follow up on the H&M thing and give a new direction to his own brand. They settup a studio in NYC with Melanie Ward to design a accessible line of his signature collection, designed in Paris.
The collection in question, (Karl Lagerfeld) FW 2006, was presented in NYC but soon after was scrapped when a company bought Hilfiger. They decided to continue with the luxury aspirations but as Karl said, « if you want to be Chanel or Fendi, you needs to put Chanel & Fendi money ».

So, this collection and the collections after are the result of that. Eventually, they finally understood and followed the vision he wanted since 2004. The last few years of his life, the Karl Lagerfeld brand was a cash-cow that made him even richer and gave jobs to his close collaborators.

Fascinating!! Always loved the show, remember an interview he gave about it that talked about the idea of genderless clothing wayyyy before it even became a thing. Great knowledge my friend xx
