Keratosis Pilaris

also very important...cause I admit to the same problem...I've had it since I was young, and the only way I've dealt with it is by exfoliating(my favorite is just mixing sugar and honey) and then intensly moisterizing...as in every day twice a day. If you have sensitive skin(which that's usually a sign of it) make sure not to use anything that's scented-it's a major irritant. I normally stick to Eucirin for extrememly dry skin and their oatmeal intense moisture lotion. And it goes away. Once I start getting lazy with my routine, it comes back again.

HI - ok. I tried to exfoliate (Body Shop Shea Exfo) and moisturize ALL the time...............................and........................
IT'S GONE! I found this amazing lotion, but I am not sure if you can get it outside of Scandinavia...Well...it's the ONLY lotion that worked for me - I've tried all the expensive ones too...!! It is the OLD Nivea cream in a jar!! All blue, round and retro with white writing, that says nothing but: NIVEA Cream...
Apparently is's a so called "cold-cream" which no one really make anyomre...
BUt - GET it!! It's very cheap and it really works...just put it on in the morning and before you go to bead...it also helps if you got rough elbows/ knees or thies/hips.
Good luck...
I am so happy...
I love showing of my arms...actually a guy from my class told me yesterday - " you have such nice arms, Caroline, so soft and feminine..." Yau!!!

I used to have it, but exfoliating and moisterizing religiously has helped. I also used to have it on my bottom :ninja:

Get a good lotion and some vitamin E oil. It works miracles on my skin.

exfoliating i find helps when i dont use an exfoliator, but a loofa and some body wash...it works wonders, and my arms and body are always baby smooth. maybe its jsut what i was born with, but i still do it and it works for me

Get a 'massage sponge' which is basically one side sponge one side exfoliator, and scrub your a*ms off  :muscles: it leaves your skin really smooth if you use it everytime you go in the bath/shower.

I am not a doctor, but I am an esthetician and I think what you have is keratosis pilaris. It actually is a skin disorder but a really, really common one. It is caused by dead cells building up around indiv. hair follicles. You need to exfoliate more, but instead of used a scrub which could irritate, I'd suggest using a chem. exfoliant- like an lotion containing AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) or a glycolic acid. The drugstore brand "Alpha-Hydrox" sells an inexpensive lotion tht you might want to try or, like Softgrey suggested, go with the Murad- it probably has glycolic in it, as that line is very big on glycolic.

Yes! keratosis pilaris. I was scrolling through the posts and saw softgrey's, and then I was trying to remember the name of it...

I have this condition too (also on my upper thighs... ugh) and I have been using AmLactin 12% lotion for a couple weeks. It has lactic acid, an alpha hodroxy acid. I read that is is recommended for KP and then it was in In Style's best of beauty issue, so hopefully it will work. Exfoliating in the shower just hurts, so it has to.

I have that KP thing going on too. AmLactin works fantastically, BUT, you MUST keep using it. Once you stop, it comes back. And it helps to use it on wet skin, it absorbs more. Its not too expensive, and it works.

Woo! Another member of the KP club here. Just purchased AmLactin for myself and am excited to see the results.

I'm just grateful I don't have it on my face like some people do.

I have KP too (very bad on my upper arms, it's a pain) and regular peelings don't do it for me... but I treid the sugar-honey mix as well as using a lotion with urea, and it's getting much better! right now I'm experimenting with eucerin 10% urea cream, as I read in a dermatology book that 10% should help.

(I'm doing work experience on a dermatology uni right now, and it's heaven for me  )

I have it on the back of my thighs as well, but not as noticeable :ninja:

I couldn't find any threads with this in it, so hopefully I didn't overlook it somewhere...if so, I apologize.

anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew how I could manage or get rid of my Keratosis Pilaris? It's a skin disease that resembles razor burn that you get on your legs and arms, and sometimes stomach area...tiny red dots EVERYWHERE. Determatologists have recommended me products but they never seem to work, so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and knows what to do?

thanks in advance.

Exfoliate and use a cream which removes dead skin cells, such as Neostrata. I have it on my arms, but when I do this it is not a problem.
Exfoliating is the main thing that will get rid of it, or at least minimize it.
Creams with AHA's are great for this.:flower:

I agree with everything LucindaMay said. Exfoliating seems to work the best for me (i have it on my cheeks and arms). Also the dermatologist perscribed me a Vitamin A (retinol) cream, which seems to be working ( I just started using it so I have seen any major results yet)

Can you name the brands that you have been using? I have it on my arms ever since.........:( .So if you can name the brands I would love to try it.

Hey...anitalilac...I have the same problem.
Except mine's not red and it's just like constant goosebumps on the back of my arms.
Lately though, I've been using L'oreal exfotonic to exfoliate. You rub it on your arms before you get into the shower (dry) and then use water to rub it in more once you're in the shower. Then use a moisurising shower wash like Dove or something like you normally do. Then I use Vaseline intensive care for a body lotion. Apply when your skin is still damp. My KP has cleared up significantly and I've only been doing it for a week.

Some people have said spraying Clinique's anti-blemish spray after exfoliating and showering seems to work as well.

hahaha, i use to hae that "chickenskin" is waht my grandma calls it. this is what i did, i would exfoliate gently with a lufa sponge and some dove bar, and then i would use eucerine (the one for the red or inflamed skin). and once a week id make a moisturizer of equal parts honey and buttermilk.
it helped alot. Time will remove them too, im 20 now and theyre nowhere nearly as visible as they were when i was 15

I actually started using my microdermabrasion cream on my arms in the shower, then I use aveeno intensive moisturizer after and I've seen a considerable difference in less then a week. I moisturize every day but scrub at it every 2nd day

You can't cure it, you can only treat it. Anyway, exfoliation and moisturization is key. Carmol 10 is supposed to work good (lotion).

oh I know it can't be cured, it's just improved considerably for me.

winter is always tought b.c your skin dries out anyways

Hello,

Like everyone hae mentioned before, you just need to exfoliate and moisturise! Lots!

Also, getting lots of sun is good, it clears it up significantly. Just make sure you slap on some sunscreen!
