Actress Kerry Washington lights up the screen and the red carpet. The starlet dazzles in looks from Chanel, Michael Kors, and Yves Saint Laurent among others. Washington, who rose to fame when she starred in Save the Last Dance, brings glamour back to Hollywood.
Where do you live?
I live in LA and I just gave up my apartment in TriBeCa. I have a house in upstate New York that I go to a lot. It’s on a lake. My parents have had a house on the lake for 20 years and I recently bought a house on the same lake.
Who are your favorite designers?
I love Doo.Ri, Oscar de la Renta, John Paul Gaultier, and Olivier for Nina Ricci. I’m also obsessed with Stella McCartney. For casual stuff, Tory Burch and Nanette Lepore are my favorites. Edun is also a favorite environmental line.
Do you own a lot of bags and shoes?
I hate shopping really. I do a lot of shopping on photo shoots and wardrobe fittings. I wind up buying a lot of stuff when I’m working. I just don’t enjoy going shopping.
If you were stranded on a desert island with three items of clothing from your wardrobe- what would they be and why?
A wide brimmed straw hat I bought in Central America and some sort of hiking boot. I’d mostly walk around barefoot but would have boots in case there was hiking I wanted to do, and some sort of very comfortable organic cotton lightweight short dress.
Your definition of style:
It’s not just clothes. You could have style with the way you speak. It’s the willingness to be or do something in a way that’s special or unique.
Where did you derive your personal style from?
I have this nutty lifestyle where my personality is drawn from so many factors. I was growing up in the Bronx, but I went to school on the Upper East Side. Now I live in L.A. and NY. I travel to Europe and Central America a lot and that has all shaped me. The psychotic, schizophrenic style comes from how diverse of a lifestyle I live.
Item you’re coveting:
Gray vinyl shiny shoes that Stella McCartney did that are vegan and stunning and the heel is beautiful. They look futuristic and classic at the same time. I bought them in black fabric because I thought that would be more sensible but I can’t stop thinking about the gray plastic ones. With her, it’s always vegan and organic and I always feel good. She’s thinking about the planet and fashion and that’s awesome.
On being named to this list:
It’s an amazing, very, very cool honor. I immediately called my stylist and hair stylist and publicist because I feel like it really is a team effort. I’m not one of these girls that since I was a little girl I’ve been obsessed with shoes and bags. I have ended up loving fashion because it’s part of what I do.
