Lana Del Rey has revealed that she and longtime boyfriend Barrie-James O’Neill have split.

“We are currently not together,” the 28-year-old singer said when asked about rumors that they had gotten engaged. “He is a wonderful person. But there are some things with which he has to deal. I will not explain it in detail. This was hard on our relationship, I no longer felt free. We’ll see how it goes.”

I'm not suprised that people are so negative about that interview but to me it was very sincere and that "sad image" of hers seem to be not created but very authentic. She sounds like a depressed person. It is a similar controversy as when Lars Von Trier said about "understanding Hitler" which was not a literal statment. In my perspective the sadness is misunderstood.

I am very much with you on this one. She's been haunted by misunderstanding since she came on the scene. She's open and honest about her thoughts and emotions, and that is often used against her instead of celebrated intellectually that someone can in fact speak their minds even if it doesn't fit with the status quo. We do not have to understand or want the life she speaks of for example in RIDE, but to show an alternative perception and lifestyle in the mainstream is brave and necessary in our time. I just hope she feels that there are enough people she is reaching and helping heal with her music and poetry... and doesn't disappear into history books prematurely I hope she will be all right.
