Leggings are very nice for the figure but can make an outfit look stupid, tacky or cheap but otherwise it can look cool.
Some people can pull it off but who should wear skirts in the winter? If you're cold then wear some tights as leggings are too...mmm don't know the word.
Minimalism could come into it, keep things minimal. Leggings will just turn the outfit into something trying to be fashionable.
I probably did not explain this well but leggings are too fashionable that it can make someone/something look ridicolous!

yeah- ha ha ha..very funny....
*not...

i had this same initial knee jerk reaction to the leggings thing...
'no way- not going back there'...but in truth...
the women i see pullling this look off best- are in fact WOMEN and not teens and twenties...probably because they still HAVE their leggings from theh 80's and know exactlly how to work the look...:P

this probably is not the case in other parts of the world...but in NYC...many of the best dressed and stylish people on the street are the older ones who have gotten all the experimenting out of their system and polished up their look....

i see some amazing stylish 50-60+ yr olds...
slim and leggings clad...:P

Word to everything.

sometimes i wonder what i ever managed to survive without leggings before they became a trend. I've been trying to stop wearing them so often because everyone else is wearing them but they seem to go with everything! I've got a few longer tops/short dresses which only match with skinnies or leggings, and I can't resist wearing them under skirts on nights out. For me, they've become more of a neccessity or a wardrobe staple than a trendy item. Is that a bad thing?

I love leggings, as long as they are app at ancle length and without frills and lace and stuff, yuk.

I do not wear them under mini denim skirts, that really is 2005/2006-ish. I wear em with a small piece of black fabric (that's suppose to act as a skirt) or mini (sweater)dresses. Mostly with heels, sometimes with great boots.

Haha i totally see what you mean! Luckily here in Holland people aren't as fashion forward then in most other countries, so only the really fashion conscious wore them (and here and there some silly cow that wears it totally in the wrong way, but ok). I really have to make myself wear jeans more often but leggings are just so much more fun!

leggins are fun for sure! but they need to be used in a councious way because somethimes people look terrible on them! i thing its all abou matching the right pieces!
but leggins are great:smile:

leggings.....there's such a thin line between getting it right and wrong....I think black is slimming and the safest option for those who are a bit worried about looking stupid

^ I know what you mean... I bought a pair of blue leggings ages ago and still haven't plucked up the courage to wear them! I think I'll just stick to black...

AGREED!! I think done properly, leggings can really pull an outfit together. Sadly, most girls I see wearing leggings simply wear them for the sake of being "trendy," and more often than not, end up looking ridiculous and much worse off, particularly since leggings are not the most flattering of clothes. I'm currently in Montreal, where it's about -30 celsius, and if I see another girl at school in leggings, I may begin to develop frost bite from looking at her.

Having read through this column, I'm confused as to the best way to wear leggings. I used to wear them under oversize sweaters, purely because it was SO comfortable in my super-cold apt. Once I got a couple of pairs of ankle boots, I threw those on, and suddenly had an outfit. Anyhow, I'm scared I look "fashion-victim"-ish, though I've been wearing them for a while... so I was hoping some of you more fashion-aware members could post some outfits that you like... just for the rest of us to get inspiration (and validation that we're wearing ours right!:()

I'm just so confused after reading all these posts that I'd love some visuals!

sorry to state the obvious, but I hate leggings! There's a reason the 80s were considered a decade of fashion DISASTER :yuk::ninja:

I don't know if I qualify as fashion aware, but I did like this example from thesartorialist.com

I can't remember her name, but she works at French Vogue.

I like the unexpected flash of flesh just at her ankles. I think the interesting shoes are key to this look.

i'm kinda torn on leggings - i have a pair, the box they came in said that they're patterned tights. i think it really depends on what you wear them with, and how you wear them... sometimes putting all these trends or pieces together can create something that looks too overdone and hence you can be labelled as fashion overkill....
i think patterned tights are cool - they're stockings or opaques that have floral or other prints all over them...
wooo cant wait for winter to start!!!

Thanks, Quimby! I loved that look too - generally, I'm not opposed to leggings used as pants when one's got the figure and style for it.

I guess I'm looking for some visual aids in how to pair leggings with minidresses, skirts, etc. the way everyone's been talking about - When it's used as pants, I get it  but leggings as an accessory confuses me.

I'm hate that people have started abusing them again and are wearing them just with outsized T-shirts - just looks plain lazy and slobbish. I know people are doing it because they think it hides lumps and bumps, but it hideously emphasises lumps and bumps that may not even be there in the first place.

They look best with something that looks like its giving you shape - I love it with neat fitting top and skirt to give a lean fitted sillhouettes, daytime dresses like woolen fitted 'jersey' dresses, or baggy all over but drawn in at the waist. At least shaped in some way, and not just a huge tent of a top made for large CAMRA-members.

Metallic leggings are pretty much the worst thing in the world, but done in a more sophisticated manner (like in #654) they're not always THAT bad. I think you have to have long, deer-like legs to truly pull it off, though.

I love leggings, espically under dresses (as long as the dress isn't too long)
